About
Hindi is spoken as a native language by 258 million people and is recognized as the 4th most-spoken language in the world. Hindi Divas is celebrated on 14 September because on this day in 1949, the Constituent Assembly of India had adopted Hindi written in Devanagari script as the official language of the Republic of India. The decision of using Hindi as the official language was ratified by the Constitution of India that came into effect on 26 January 1950.
Apart from Hindi, English is also recognized as an Official Language of India. Different states of India identify their own official languages through legislation. There is no national language as declared by the Constitution of India. Hindi and English are used for official purposes such as parliamentary proceedings, judiciary, communications between the Central Government and a State Government. States within India have the liberty and powers to specify their own official language(s) through legislation and therefore there are 22 officially recognized languages in India.
Hindi Divas (Hindi: हिन्दी दिवस) is celebrated every year on 14 September in government offices, firms, schools and other institutions to popularise Hindi language. It is also an occasion to connect with Hindi scholars and Indologists.
