The poor performance of Indian manufacturing is reflected in poor growth in the sector, and a growing trade deficit. At the same time there are also notable successes in high technology and high knowledge sectors, such as generic pharmaceuticals and IT services respectively.
-What do these successes tell us about the policies needed to build a future for Indian manufacturing?
-How can the Indian manufacturing deficit be addressed?
-Is it a matter of going back some form of industrial policy? Or is it a matter of promoting innovation?
India has shown capacity to develop frugally-engineered products for her large population at very low prices. Is this a form of innovation in which India has a comparative advantage to break into world markets for the poor?
