Development Initiatives for Indigenous Communities in India: the KISS Model and Reflections from a Canadian Perspective<\/strong><\/p>\n

In 2012 Mr. Barj S. Dhahan<\/a> initiated the Dhahan Lecture<\/a> in honour of his parents, Mr. Budh Singh and Mrs. Kashmir Kaur, in association with The Canada-India Centre for Excellence<\/a>.<\/p>\n

For the 2021 Dhahan Lecture, we are greatly honoured to welcome noted educationalist and innovator, Dr. Achyuta Samanta<\/strong>, in conversation with Dr. Beverly Jacobs<\/strong>, former President of the Native Women’s Association of Canada.<\/p>\n

During the Lecture, Dr. Samanta will reflect on his personal journey in establishing the Kalinga Institute of Social Services (KISS) in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, as an educational and vocational training entity dedicated to India\u2019s tribal communities. This will be followed by reflections on the Indigenous experience in Canada by Dr. Jacobs, with the aim of identifying shared insights, particularly focusing on issues surrounding women\u2019s empowerment.<\/p>\n

About the Speaker<\/strong>:<\/a> Prof. Achyuta Samanta<\/strong> is an educationist, humanitarian, and statesman who grew up in Kalarabanka, Odisha. He founded a polytechnic institution in 1992 while working as a Chemistry Lecturer. The industry training institution grew into Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology, (KIIT) by 2004. In the same year, he also founded the Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS) to provide free education to indigenous kids.<\/p>\n

About the Speaker:<\/strong><\/a> Dr. Beverly Jacobs<\/strong> is an Associate Professor and Acting Dean at the University of Windsor Faculty of Law. She is also an Indigenous Human Rights Monitor at Mohawk Institute Residential School Survivors\u2019 Secretariat. Her research focuses on Indigenous Legal Orders, Indigenous Wholistic Health, Indigenous Research Methodologies, and Decolonization of Eurocentric Law. She is known for her leading voice, work, and commitment to Indigenous politics in Canada and is universally respected in this regard for being a tireless and formidable advocate.<\/p>\n
