The Centre for Indigenous Initiatives welcomes and supports Indigenous peoples who work and study at Carleton University, as students, faculty and professional services staff. The Centre for Indigenous Initiatives aims to inspire, encourage and empower the Carleton community, which includes Indigenous and non-Indigenous Carleton students, faculty, professional services staff, and alumni, to work collaboratively in creating and maintaining strong relationships and partnerships with Indigenous peoples and communities; Indigenous leaders and organizations; and mainstream groups and organizations. The Centre for Indigenous Initiatives team has three Indigenous Liaison Officers who work collaboratively in creating a web of interconnected programs and services that support the Carleton community to ensure Indigenous cultures, traditions, histories and worldviews are respected and represented on campus.

The Centre for Indigenous Initiatives supports Indigenous students, faculty and professional services staff through a variety of programs and services, including the annual Indigenous welcome and the Knowledge Keepers Program. The Centre for Indigenous Initiatives hosts a number of Indigenous social and cultural activities in the Ojigkwanong Centre (228 Paterson Hall). Public lectures, pow wows and other events provide a learning and sharing environment for the Carleton community to promote knowledge and understanding of First Nations, Inuit and Métis cultures, traditions, histories, worldviews and contemporary issues.

The Centre for Indigenous Initiatives, housed within the Department of Equity Services, aims to:

  • Increase the recruitment and retention of Indigenous students, faculty and professional services staff;
  • Support academic achievement by Indigenous members of the Carleton community;
  • Provide space on campus where Indigenous students’ cultures, traditions and worldviews are represented and respected; and
  • Work collaboratively with Indigenous communities and departments and groups on campus to provide exceptional programs and support services for Indigenous students, faculty and professional services staff.
