{"id":465,"date":"2022-10-14T14:19:19","date_gmt":"2022-10-14T18:19:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/indigenous\/avpii\/?p=465"},"modified":"2022-10-14T14:19:44","modified_gmt":"2022-10-14T18:19:44","slug":"kahente-horn-miller-avp-indigenous-teaching-learning-and-research-receives-leadership-award","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/indigenous\/avpii\/2022\/kahente-horn-miller-avp-indigenous-teaching-learning-and-research-receives-leadership-award\/","title":{"rendered":"Kahente Horn-Miller, AVP Indigenous Teaching, Learning and Research Receives Leadership Award"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Associate Vice-President (Indigenous Teaching, Learning and Research) Kahente Horn-Miller has received a significant leadership award for her ongoing work on Indigenous research methodologies, Indigenous governance and consensus-based decision-making.<\/p>\n<p>Prof. Horn-Miller is this year\u2019s recipient of the Outstanding Achievement in Intellectual Advancement Award that was presented in September as part of the fourth annual Celebration of Nations Outstanding Achievement Awards in St. Catharines, Ont.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis award is very meaningful for me as an indigenous community member. I was chosen by my peers, a recognition I value,\u201d said Horn-Miller. \u201cThey hold me up in the work that I do, and therefore they are holding up the students and the young people that are currently in academia. The work that I&#8217;m involved in is a communal effort. And this award really epitomizes that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-2037 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/anako\/wp-content\/uploads\/Kahente-Award-1-400x489.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"489\" \/>Prof. Horn-Miller is an associate professor in the School of Indigenous and Canadian Studies at Carleton. She serves as one of three co-chairs of the Carleton University Strategic Indigenous Initiatives Committee, which developed Kin\u00e0m\u00e0gawin, Carleton\u2019s revitalized Indigenous strategy that includes 41 Carleton-specific calls to action to work towards conciliation with Indigenous Peoples and to make Carleton a more inclusive space. On July 1 2020<strong>, <\/strong>she was appointed as Carleton\u2019s inaugural Assistant Vice-President, Indigenous Initiatives, a role that has since been elevated to Associate Vice-President, Indigenous Teaching, Research and Learning.<\/p>\n<p>Prof. Horn-Miller initiated the Indigenous Collaborative Learning Bundles at Carleton and works to substantially increase Indigenous content in classrooms across various disciplines. Dr. Horn-Miller\u2019s research and teaching is centred in the development of Haudenosaunee-specific and pedagogical practices. Her research interests include Indigenous methodologies, Indigenous women, identity politics, colonization, Indigenous governance, and consensus-based decision making.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn behalf of Carleton University, congratulations to Kahente on receiving this award,\u201d said Provost and Vice-President (Academic) Jerry Tomberlin. Kahente\u2019s work and leadership in fostering Indigenous ways of knowing in teaching, learning and research in the academy and in community continues to have tremendous positive impact in Carleton University\u2019s and Canada\u2019s journey towards conciliation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Celebration of Nations is part of a long-term vision of the FirstOntario Performing Arts Centre, Kakekalanicks and the City of St. Catharines and the awards are intended to honour exceptional people whose contributions to Indigenous knowledge, language, art, history and culture are widely recognized, respected and valued.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Associate Vice-President (Indigenous Teaching, Learning and Research) Kahente Horn-Miller has received a significant leadership award for her ongoing work on Indigenous research methodologies, Indigenous governance and consensus-based decision-making.
