For Prof. <\/span>Andr\u00e9s C. L\u00f3pez<\/span><\/a> (he\/they),<\/span> incorporating basket weaving into pedagogy is a tool for decolonizing the classroom and challenging colonial academic ways of knowing.\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Prof. L\u00f3pez is an associate professor in the <\/span>School of Indigenous and Canadian Studies at Carleton<\/span><\/a>. Last term, he guided a cohort of graduate students through the skillsharing process of making doublewoven rivercane baskets, a practice that originated with the Cherokee people in what is now called North Carolina and the American southeast.\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Incorporating skillshare in the classroom contributes to a paradigm shift towards decolonized academic spaces by introducing students to Indigenous ways of knowing.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Prof. <\/span>L\u00f3pez\u2019s<\/span> graduate course<\/span>,<\/span><\/span> Gendering Canada: Queer of Color Critiques<\/span><\/span> (CDNS 5202)<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>,<\/span> used <\/span>doublewoven<\/span> basketry to explore the mutual dependencies between queer and Indigenous studies.<\/span> The weaving process begins at the<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>basket<\/span>\u2019s<\/span> base and <\/span>continues <\/span>up from the inside before flipping directions and weaving a second wall<\/span> that encompasses the first<\/span>.<\/span> The<\/span>\u00a0result<\/span> is a <\/span>sturdy basket with two walls.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

According to <\/span>Prof. <\/span>Qwo<\/span>-Li<\/span> Driskill<\/span><\/a>, a Cherokee scholar at Oregon State University<\/span>, the <\/span>doublewoven <\/span>basket acts as a metaphor<\/span> for the need for <\/span><\/span>queer and Indigenous studies to exist together.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI had students make baskets, so that we could actually physically touch it and see it as a way of thinking about our scholarship, or what that might look like, even though not all of the students were Indigenous in the class. It\u2019s a call and critique to both [Indigenous studies and queer studies]<\/span>,\u201d said<\/span> Prof.<\/span> L\u00f3pez<\/span>,<\/span> \u201c<\/span>b<\/span>ecause without us <\/span>working<\/span> together, without us thinking of each other as one full basket, <\/span><\/span><\/span>things don\u2019t <\/span>work,<\/span> and we wind up erasing people.<\/span>\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Incorporating <\/span>skillshare<\/span> into the classroom has also informed other elements of his pedagogy. In larger classes, <\/span>some students will learn faster than others and begin teaching one another. <\/span>Prof<\/span>. L\u00f3pez describes this as creating a communal classroom space, where he is no longer the expert, the sole teacher, but rather the students <\/span>have an opportunity to <\/span>participate in <\/span>teaching<\/span>. Prof. L\u00f3pez brings the idea of the communal classroom into his classes even when he is not incorporating skillshare.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Outside the classroom, he practices his Maya ancestor\u2019s traditional <\/span>backstrap weaving<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

For skilled weavers, Prof. L\u00f3pez says they can see a finished scarf and know the creation story from when it was woven.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a creation story,\u201d said Prof. L\u00f3pez. \u201cWe have been doing this for millennia, we have ways of creating knowledge, we have ways of passing histories and stories.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Prof. L\u00f3pez <\/span>learned Cherokee <\/span>doublewoven<\/span> basketry from <\/span>Prof. Driskill<\/span> and <\/span>helped facilitate workshops in classrooms and for conferences that incorporated <\/span>skillshare<\/span>. <\/span>Prof. Driskill <\/span><\/span>e<\/span>xplore<\/span>s<\/span> \u201cdecolonial <\/span>skillshare<\/span>\u201d<\/span><\/a><\/span> as a pedagogical practice<\/span> that highlights <\/span>Indigenous <\/span>rhetoric to continue <\/span>traditions<\/span>,<\/span> teach the next generation of Indigenous Peoples, <\/span>and strengthen <\/span>alliances<\/span> with non-Indigenous people<\/span> by building <\/span>a strong sense of mutual understanding.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
