My family and I are the descendants of the Cree (nehiyawewin)-speaking M\u00e9tis\u00a0people of m\u00e2nitow s\u00e2kahikanihk, Plains Cree for \u2018god\u2019s lake\u2019, in English known as Lac Ste. Anne.<\/p>\n

Lac Ste Anne, Alberta, is a known and recognized M\u00e9tis community that is part of the broader M\u00e9tis Nation. My grandparents are Matilda L\u2019Hirondelle and Emile Belcourt. My dad is Tony Belcourt. Although I wasn\u2019t raised there and never lived there, this is where they were born and raised, and the community my ancestors are from. I grew up in Ottawa, where my\u00a0father worked<\/a> on the national and international stage for Indigenous rights. I moved to Toronto when I was 20 to pursue a career in film and television.<\/p>\n

Shane Belcourt is a two-time CSA-nominated Director, with award-winning narrative and documentary works in both film and TV. His debut feature film\u00a0TKARONTO<\/i><\/b>, had a theatrical release, was sold to SuperChannel and Air Canada, and was showcased in both the TIFF Indigenous Cinema Retrospective and the UCLA Film & Television Archive travelling exhibition, \u201cThrough Indian Eyes: Native American Cinema<\/i>\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Shane also directed\u00a0CHANIE WENJACK,<\/i><\/b>\u00a0which Walrus Magazine noted as \u201cthe Heritage Minute Canada needs to see\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>His most recent feature film,\u00a0RED ROVER<\/i><\/b>, premiered at the Whistler Film Festival, opened the Canadian Film Festival and was released in March 2020 to glowing reviews.<\/p>\n

On the documentary side of things, Shane directed\u00a0KAHA:WI<\/i><\/b>, which features dancer and choreographer Santee Smith. It premiered at the imagineNATIVE Film + Media Arts Festival, aired on APTN and CBC Docs, and won a CSC Award for Best Cinematography in 2016, along with a CSA Best Director nomination. Shane co-directed (with Lisa Jackson) the CBC one-hour\u00a0INDICTMENT: THE CRIMES OF SHELLY CHARTIER,<\/i><\/b>\u00a0which won Best Doc at imagineNATIVE. In the Fall of 2020,\u00a0AMPLIFY<\/i><\/b>,\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>aired on APTN, which Shane created and showran. He was a Consulting Producer (writing room story editor) on CBC\u201ds new drama series,\u00a0THE TRICKSTER.<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

Currently, Shane is in production on the feature documentary,\u00a0BEAUTIFUL SCARS<\/b>,\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>on internationally acclaimed songwriter Tom Wilson. He is also writing a feature narrative based around a family tale entitled\u00a0DUMBBELL<\/b>, which received development funding from Telefilm Canada.<\/p>\n

Shane is an alumna of the\u00a0TIFF Talent Lab<\/i>\u00a0and NSI\u2019s\u00a0Totally Television<\/i>\u00a0programs, a member of the DGC, and is represented by Carl Liberman at The Characters Talent Agency.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
