{"id":429,"date":"2021-07-28T10:10:07","date_gmt":"2021-07-28T14:10:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/indigenous\/?page_id=429"},"modified":"2024-08-16T10:37:39","modified_gmt":"2024-08-16T14:37:39","slug":"indigenous-peer-mentorship-program","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/indigenous\/cisce\/indigenous-peer-mentorship-program\/","title":{"rendered":"Indigenous Peer Mentorship Program"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Program Overview<\/h2>\n<p>The Indigenous Peer Mentor Program helps first-year students transition to university life by promoting student engagement and a sense of belonging on campus.<\/p>\n<p>The Indigenous Peer Mentor Program matches new self-identified Indigenous students at Carleton University with experienced Indigenous students who act as mentors, providing academic and social support and ongoing advice.<\/p>\n<p>The program provides members with social, academic, and cultural development, peer-to-peer support, and activities to support community building and personal growth.<\/p>\n<p>This program is offered by the Centre for Indigenous Support and Community Engagement in collaboration with the Student Experience Office.<\/p>\n<h2>Program Streams<\/h2>\n<p>This year the peer mentorship will offer three streams to best serve the Indigenous community.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Carleton Peer Mentorship: Matched with new undergraduate students<\/li>\n<li>Indigenous Enriched Support Program (IESP): Matched with students in the IESP program and<\/li>\n<li>Community Partners: Matched with a community partner such as a school or an Indigenous Community Centre.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Program Goals<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Support Carleton&#8217;s new Indigenous students in their well-being, community building, and creating a sense of belonging<\/li>\n<li>Provide encouragement and support to Indigenous students in their efforts to thrive in school and community programs<\/li>\n<li>Connect students to on campus and off campus resources to support their well-being<\/li>\n<li>Share learning experiences and knowledge to develop and enhance Indigenous cultural knowledge and understanding<\/li>\n<li>Provide insight into the unique challenges faced by Indigenous students in post-secondary education and help first year students navigate these challenges<\/li>\n<li>Dispel confusion and false perceptions about post-secondary learning<\/li>\n<li>Develop leadership, communication, and solution-based skills<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<table border=\"0\" width=\"95%\" align=\"center\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"50%\">\n<div class=\"u-center-text\">\n\t<p>\n\t\t<a class=\"button__red button__red--solid\" href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/indigenous\/cisce\/indigenous-peer-mentorship-program\/mentors\/\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Indigenous Peer Mentors<\/a>\n\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<td width=\"50%\">\n<div class=\"u-center-text\">\n\t<p>\n\t\t<a class=\"button__red button__red--solid\" href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/indigenous\/cisce\/indigenous-peer-mentorship-program\/connect\/\"  rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Connect with a Mentor<\/a>\n\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Program Overview The Indigenous Peer Mentor Program helps first-year students transition to university life by promoting student engagement and a sense of belonging on campus. is an experienced student who is willing to participate in the reciprocal process of sharing their knowledge, skills and expertise to facilitate a new student's transition into university life and help build their leadership skills.\r\n\r\nTo become an Indigenous Peer Mentor, you must:\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>Self-identify as First Nations, M\u00e9tis, or Inuit<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Be enrolled as an undergraduate student, 2nd year standing or higher, at Carleton University<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Be in good standing in their academic program<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Have excellent communication, interpersonal, and time management skills<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Show compassion and empathy for others<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Be knowledgeable of campus resources<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Have the ability to, or be willing to learn, to use online platforms such as MS Teams and Zoom<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Present a clear Vulnerable Police Record Check<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Be willing to commit to communicating regularly with your assigned student<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Attend training sessions<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\nAll Indigenous Peer Mentors are interviewed before being matched with a new student.
