{"id":457,"date":"2021-07-28T10:28:41","date_gmt":"2021-07-28T14:28:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/indigenous\/?page_id=457"},"modified":"2025-12-12T10:47:26","modified_gmt":"2025-12-12T15:47:26","slug":"mentors","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/indigenous\/cisce\/indigenous-peer-mentorship-program\/mentors\/","title":{"rendered":"Indigenous Peer Mentors"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>An Indigenous Peer Mentor is an experienced student who is willing to participate in the reciprocal process of sharing their knowledge, skills and expertise to facilitate a new student&#8217;s transition into university life and help build their leadership skills.<\/p>\n<p>To become an Indigenous Peer Mentor, you must:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Self-identify as First Nations, M\u00e9tis, or Inuit<\/li>\n<li>Be enrolled as an undergraduate student, 2nd year standing or higher, at Carleton University<\/li>\n<li>Be in good standing in their academic program<\/li>\n<li>Have excellent communication, interpersonal, and time management skills<\/li>\n<li>Show compassion and empathy for others<\/li>\n<li>Be knowledgeable of campus resources<\/li>\n<li>Have the ability to, or be willing to learn, to use online platforms such as MS Teams and Zoom<\/li>\n<li>Present a clear Vulnerable Police Record Check<\/li>\n<li>Be willing to commit to communicating regularly with your assigned student<\/li>\n<li>Attend training sessions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>All Indigenous Peer Mentors are interviewed before being matched with a new student. 14:10:07","post_content":"<h2>Program Overview<\/h2>\r\nThe Indigenous Peer Mentor Program helps first-year students transition to university life by promoting student engagement and a sense of belonging on campus.\r\n\r\nThe Indigenous Peer Mentor Program matches new self-identified Indigenous students at Carleton University with experienced Indigenous students who act as mentors, providing academic and social support and ongoing advice.\r\n\r\nThe program provides members with social, academic, and cultural development, peer-to-peer support, and activities to support community building and personal growth.\r\n\r\nThis program is offered by the Centre for Indigenous Support and Community Engagement in collaboration with the Student Experience Office.\r\n<h2>Program Streams<\/h2>\r\nThis year the peer mentorship will offer three streams to best serve the Indigenous community.\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>Carleton Peer Mentorship: Matched with new undergraduate students<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Indigenous Enriched Support Program (IESP): Matched with students in the IESP program and<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Community Partners: Matched with a community partner such as a school or an Indigenous Community Centre.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h2>Program Goals<\/h2>\r\n<ul>\r\n \t<li>Support Carleton's new Indigenous students in their well-being, community building, and creating a sense of belonging<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Provide encouragement and support to Indigenous students in their efforts to thrive in school and community programs<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Connect students to on campus and off campus resources to support their well-being<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Share learning experiences and knowledge to develop and enhance Indigenous cultural knowledge and understanding<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Provide insight into the unique challenges faced by Indigenous students in post-secondary education and help first year students navigate these challenges<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Dispel confusion and false perceptions about post-secondary learning<\/li>\r\n \t<li>Develop leadership, communication, and solution-based skills<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<table border=\"0\" width=\"95%\"
