Preference will be given to students who have demonstrated a willingness to use their knowledge and skills to benefit Indigenous communities. Eligible recipients must be Canadian Citizens or permanent residents of Canada and must meet OSAP&#8217;s Ontario Residency requirements. The awards committee of the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs will select recipients from a list of candidates recommended by each department. Endowed in 2008 by Joy Harvie Maclaren (BSC\/44, LLD McGill University), Joy was a passionate supporter and advocate of Indigenous peoples. Continuing the legacy of her father, who was given the honorary title of &#8220;Old Sun&#8221; in 1962 by the Blackfoot nation in Alberta, the Mohawk nation in Akwasasne, Quebec and the Ojibway in Ontario. A special naming ceremony was held at Carleton University&#8217;s Alumni Park in 1993 to recognize Joy&#8217;s commitment to promoting Indigenous culture and education across Canada.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Value: Up to three awards at $10,000 each<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><em>*Letter of support from Supervisor Required. Eligible students will demonstrate an interest in History in what is now known as Canada. Preference will be given to entering students.\u00a0 Endowed in 2020 by Know History. Please refer to the Graduate Studies Internal Awards website under <a href=\"https:\/\/gradstudents.carleton.ca\/awards-and-funding\/internal-awards\/#donor-funded-awards\">Donor-Funded Awards<\/a> for further details.<\/b><\/p>\n<h3>Indigenous Student Emergency Fund<\/h3>\n<p>The Indigenous Student Emergency Fund exists to provide short-term financial assistance to Indigenous students experiencing unexpected financial emergencies that may impact their ability to continue their studies. Donations to the fund continue to be made on an ongoing basis to support students in need. Learn more about the <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/indigenous\/cisce\/indigenous-student-emergency-fund-procedure\/\">Indigenous Student Emergency Fund<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>Entrance Bursaries<\/h3>\n<p>If you have been admitted to Carleton with an admissions average of 80 percent or better, you will automatically be considered for a renewable entrance scholarship at the time of admission. The admissions average we use is calculated from the grades submitted by your high school in support of your application. Entrance scholarships are offered for fall entry only.\u00a0 You may be offered a renewable entrance scholarship provided you are entering Carleton for the first time from high school or CEGEP and have no previous attendance at post-secondary educational institutions. To be considered for an entrance scholarship, the University\u2019s Admissions Services must receive your complete application for admission and all required grades (either directly or through the Ontario Universities Application Centre) by June 15. Entrance scholarship offers are not assessed or reassessed on final high school grades.<\/p>\n<h3>Prestige Scholarships<\/h3>\n<p>Our highest awards are our Prestige Scholarships: the Chancellor\u2019s Scholarship, the Richard Lewar Entrance Scholarship, the Carleton University Scholarship of Excellence, the Carleton University SHAD Scholarship, the Jay Woo and CAA Scholarship, the Riordon Scholarship, and the Collins Prestige Scholarship.<\/p>\n<p>You will be considered for a prestigious scholarship only if you are entering Carleton directly from high school or CEGEP. Students who have previously attended a post-secondary educational institution (either college or university) are not eligible for these awards. For all prestige scholarships, you must achieve an admission average of 90 percent or better. The selection committee will also assess the range of your community or secondary school extracurricular activities.<\/p>\n<h2>External Indigenous Student Awards<\/h2>\n<p>Indigenous students may also be eligible for various awards from organizations and associations outside of Carleton University. There is a wide variety of external scholarships and bursaries available for First Nations, Inuit and M\u00e9tis students.<\/p>\n<p>The Centre for Indigenous Support and Community Engagement recommends the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Indspire \u2013 Building Brighter Futures\u00a0<a title=\"Indspire Scholarships and Bursaries\" href=\"https:\/\/indspire.ca\/programs\/building-brighter-futures\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Indspire Scholarship and Bursaries<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aandc.gc.ca\/bursaries\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Indigenous Bursaries Search Tool<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/kpmg.com\/ca\/en\/home\/careers\/students\/student-programs\/indigenous-student-programs.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">KPMG\u2019s Indigenous Student Awards<\/a> are available to Indigenous post-secondary students in the pursuit of post-secondary education across Canada.\u00a0 Preference will be given to students studying in the following programs: Business Administration, Public Administration, Accounting, Information Technology, Human Resources, Communications, and Marketing.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/can01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.metisnation.org%2Fprograms-and-services%2Feducation-training%2Fpost-secondary-education%2Fmno-justice-legal-education-bursary-program%2F&amp;data=05%7C02%7CLaneBourbonniere%40cunet.carleton.ca%7C9dd24314cc6b4c7f176d08defd32d490%7C6ad91895de06485ebc51fce126cc8530%7C0%7C0%7C639226593771210414%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJFbXB0eU1hcGkiOnRydWUsIlYiOiIwLjAuMDAwMCIsIlAiOiJXaW4zMiIsIkFOIjoiTWFpbCIsIldUIjoyfQ%3D%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&amp;sdata=JIRyVEi6hbTGS%2BnSMvqLW%2Fvk53c39N6mVChNPK4%2Barg%3D&amp;reserved=0\">MNO Justice and Legal Education Bursary Program:<\/a>\u00a0 This program is designed to reduce financial barriers and support M\u00e9tis learners pursuing legal education and legal service professions, creating more pathways for M\u00e9tis voices into Canada\u2019s legal system. This program is funded by a grant from The Law Foundation of Ontario\u2019s Access to Justice Fund, as part of its commitments to Truth and Reconciliation and access to justice education for Indigenous students across Canada.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nwmb.com\/en\/conservation-education\/jorgen-bolt-memorial-nunavut-wildlife-management-board-scholarship\">Jorgen Bolt Memorial Award:<\/a> To support Nunavut students pursuing post-secondary education in wildlife biology, wildlife management, or the application of Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit in wildlife management.
