By creating fabric out of bamboo, a renewable natural resource, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vearthy.com\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vearthy<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> sells sustainable textiles.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The business\u2019 first product is its bamboo lyocell bedding which is made through an all-organic production process. Park Ranger to Entrepreneur<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To understand the inspiration behind <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vearthy.com\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vearthy<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, you have to tap into Dooley\u2019s childhood which was spent outdoors, whether that be camping in his hometown of Orillia, Ontario or visiting family in Manitoulin Island, home of the Anishinabek of Whitefish River First Nation.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dooley\u2019s professional background is in the natural resource sector, which serves him well as a park ranger with B.C. Parks in Squamish, British Columbia.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI decided to start a business to sustain myself through the winter months which I have off as a park ranger. What I try to make aligns with things I believe in as I really care about the environment. All the conservation work, data collection, and nature projects I get to be part of as a ranger have reflected back onto the business,\u201d said Dooley.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, his entrepreneurial mindset came from attending the Adventure Tourism Business Operations program at College of the Rockies in Golden, B.C., which sets students up with the business skills required to join the ecotourism industry, including entrepreneurship, marketing, sustainability, and business training.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp;Dooley\u2019s interest in environmentalism, business, and graphic design all came together when he created <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vearthy<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which is an e-commerce platform run through Shopify. And it\u2019s a one-man show. While the website is fully automated, Dooley has been managing and overseeing everything since day one of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vearthy.com\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vearthy<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><b>Company Goals: Building a <\/b><b><i>Vearthy<\/i><\/b><b> Community Around Health and Wellness<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scrolling through the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vearthy.com\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vearthy<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> site, there is a section dedicated to nature blogs with articles such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vearthy.com\/blogs\/nature-pieces\/bamboo-and-the-fight-against-climate-change\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018Bamboo and the Fight Against Climate Change,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019 as well as a section on sustainable tips. Dooley hopes to grow <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vearthy.com\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vearthy<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> into a community of conscious consumers who care about the health and wellness of the planet and the individual.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe community is the biggest goal this year. Finding a similar audience, bringing them together, and using that as the leverage to get the word out about sustainable products and making a positive impact in the consumer world. We\u2019re trying to get people\u2019s mindsets to focus on high quality, low impact goods,\u201d said Dooley.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Further down the road, Dooley hopes to turn <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vearthy.com\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vearthy<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> into a B Corporation, a business that has both social and environmental impact, or become carbon neutral certified.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"giving-back-experience-in-the-indigenous-entrepreneurship-program\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Giving Back: Experience in the I<\/b><b>ndigenous Entrepreneurship Program<\/b><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As an entrepreneur, Dooley has had a lot of takeaways from the <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/future-edge\/cu-programs\/indigenous-entrepreneurship-program\/\">Indigenous Entrepreneurship Program<\/a> developed by the<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/sprott.carleton.ca\/\"> Sprott School of Business<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/innovationhub\/\">Innovation Hub at Carleton University<\/a>. The modules that he really learned from were the ones on pitching a venture and pitch presentations.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to form a good pitch is super important and it doesn\u2019t matter if it\u2019s a pitch for new investors or for funding. It\u2019s good to have a solid foundation and template to follow, and so far, that\u2019s been one of the most helpful modules.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/innovationhub\/\">Carleton\u2019s Innovation Hub<\/a> may be able to help me out with some behind-the-scenes action at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vearthy.com\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vearthy<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as well,\u201d said Dooley, on the resources offered within the <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/future-edge\/cu-programs\/indigenous-entrepreneurship-program\/\">Indigenous Entrepreneurship Program<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Though bamboo, an invasive species, cannot be grown naturally in Canada, Dooley would love to move his business and the assembly of his products to the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Birch Island area, up in Manitoulin Island on Whitefish River First Nation.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI would love to have everything run out of Whitefish River First Nation and have the opportunity to bring economic development to the Nation. Not that it\u2019s a huge corporation, but a few jobs can make a difference. It would be great if we could produce everything on reserve, on-site and have it made in Canada,\u201d said Dooley.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp;<\/span><b>Advice for Young Entrepreneurs on Launching their First Business&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In launching <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vearthy.com\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vearthy<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Dooley has had his fair share of challenges and finding initial funding for his business was one of the big ones.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI was putting a lot of my own money into the business in the beginning before it was self-sustaining. In the grand scheme of things, it wasn\u2019t all my savings, but it feels disheartening when you\u2019re putting your hard-earned money into it and there\u2019s not a huge return to investment, yet,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, he encourages young entrepreneurs who have a business idea they want to launch to \u201cjust do it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou have to realize that it might not be a huge return on investment right away but it\u2019s not an overnight game.
