Together with the Sprott School of Business,&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.hatchcusa.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Hatch<\/a>, and the Carleton University Students\u2019 Association\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cusaonline.ca\/who-we-are\/service-centres\/womxns\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Womxn\u2019s Centre<\/a>, the Hub hosted the Female Founders Street Market in the Nicol Building on March 30.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The event featured 14 female founders who participated in the market, which was open to all. It also provided them the opportunity to network with other female business owners, and to speak with students hoping to follow in their footsteps one day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/sprott.carleton.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/Flourish-Stone-Wears-Stand-at-the-Female-Founders-Street-Market.jpg\" alt=\"Two women in conversation behind a stand showcasing jewellery they have created.\" class=\"wp-image-66647\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The Female Founders Street Market provided women entrepreneurs an opportunity to showcase their businesses and grow their network of female founders.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kirsten Josling, fourth-year Bachelor of International Business student at Sprott who also works with Innovation Hub, said that the Carleton community turned out in strong numbers to support the entrepreneurs and sent the message that \u201cwe\u2019re interested in what you\u2019re doing and we\u2019re here to listen and here to support.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cThis show of camaraderie and support at the market was truly inspiring and something we should carry with us. It is the type of inspiration that can convince someone to start their own business or believe they have what it takes to take up space at the table because there are others like them doing the same.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Melissa Pole, visual artist of 15 years who showcased her work at the market, expressed her excitement at being able to present her creations in-person after two years of virtual exhibits, while connecting with other women entrepreneurs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/sprott.carleton.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/Melissa-Pole-at-Female-Founders-Street-Market.jpg\" alt=\"A woman standing behind a table displaying her artwork.\" class=\"wp-image-66643\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Melissa Pole, a visual artist of 15 years, said that after two years of a pandemic it was &#8220;awesome&#8221; to interact in-person with other women entrepreneurs.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s nice to see the reality that it\u2019s not all patriarchal \u2013 there are also women that lead businesses and provide for their communities. I think it\u2019s really awesome.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Emily Carr is a fourth-year Bachelor of Arts student at Carleton University and member of Hatch who launched her company, Brewd, last year. She has created a coffee-based body exfoliator that she sells out of coffee shops in Ottawa. With her sights on growing her business, Emily participated in the event to gain confidence when speaking about her product, as well as to receive feedback on her product and business.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cBeing here I feel supported by the school. And as for the girls that are organizing it \u2013 I\u2019m really grateful that they put all their time aside, while being students and having a million other things to work on, to create an environment like this,\u201d Emily added.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/sprott.carleton.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/Emily-Carrs-Stand-at-the-Female-Founders-Street-Market.jpg\" alt=\"Two women standing behind a table and presenting their product to potential customers.\" class=\"wp-image-66645\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Emily Carr, the founder of Brewd and fourth-year Bachelor of Arts student at Carleton University, attended the event to gain confidence in presenting her product and receive feedback on her business.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The event saw 300 attendees, with some vendors selling out. All 14 founders who participated expressed interest in attending a similar event in the future, and the organizers are considering making the Female Founders Street Market a recurring event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s really nice to see so many young people having the courage to start their own businesses,\u201d said Larra Milliken from Flourish Stonewear. \u201cTo them, I just want to say don\u2019t stick with your first version of yourself. Keep remaking who you are until you\u2019re happy with the brand you have or the work you\u2019re doing. Keep striving for a better version of who you are.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The event concluded with a keynote address from Patricia Bebia Mawa, the co-founder and executive vice president of Silvertrust Media and Afroglobal Television. Silvertrust Media is a renowned communications and entertainment company based out of Toronto, and Afroglobal Television is a global channel catering to people of African heritage around the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/sprott.carleton.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/Patricia-Bebia-Mawa-at-the-Female-Founders-Street-Market.jpg\" alt=\"Patricia Bebia Mawa standing behind a pedestal\" class=\"wp-image-66651\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Patricia Bebia Mawa, the co-founder and executive vice president of Silvertrust Media and Afroglobal Television, urged&nbsp;current and aspiring entrepreneurs at the&nbsp;Female Founders Street Market to &#8220;go big.&#8221;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Patricia had one key message to women entrepreneurs and aspiring entrepreneurs.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"not-prose cu-quote cu-component-spacing\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cGo big and don\u2019t think small.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt is time for women to do big things. If you\u2019re doing your business in Ottawa, think about expanding to Ontario. If you\u2019re in Ontario, think of expanding to the rest of Canada, and even internationally. Don\u2019t be afraid to go to the banks and ask for loans \u2013 just come up with a very good business plan and make sure that your foundation is strong. Don\u2019t be afraid to go big.
