\n Pitch Night Recaps – Hatch, Launch, & Changemaker 2023\n <\/h1>\n \n \n <\/header>\n\n <\/div>\n\n <\/div>\n\n <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n

\u200bEvery <\/span>term<\/span>, <\/span>Carleton University<\/span>\u2019s Innovation Hub<\/a><\/span> hosts pitch nights for each of <\/span>its incubator programs<\/span>, where student entrepreneurs showcase their innovative ideas and compete for<\/span> prizes<\/span>, mentorship, and networking opportunities. <\/span>The energy in the room is <\/span>un<\/span>like any other event<\/span> on campus<\/span>,<\/span> with <\/span>each <\/span>student founder presenting their businesses ideas and solutions<\/span> to a panel of judges, and an a<\/span>udience of students, staff and community members<\/span>.<\/span> From sustainability initiatives<\/span> to mobile apps, to film festivals<\/span> and more, the diversity of the startups presented at these pitch nights is truly impressive. The audience gets a front-row seat to learn how students took their ideas from the drawing board to reality and they are inspired to pursue their own entrepreneurial dreams as well.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In early April 2023, the <\/span>Innovation <\/span>Hub held pitch nights for three of its <\/span>incubator <\/span>programs: Changemaker, Hatch, and Launch. Each event <\/span>was distinctive <\/span>and<\/span> the<\/span> individual pitch<\/span>es <\/span>s<\/span>howcased <\/span>simple<\/span>, <\/span>innovative<\/span>, potentially disruptive<\/span> ideas that <\/span>strive to <\/span>change our world for the better.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Changemaker: Pitch Night 2023<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u200bHaven Books, <\/span>CUSA\u2019s<\/span> student-run bookstore and cafe, <\/span>hosted the Changemaker pitch night on April 5th. <\/span>Haven <\/span>provided a <\/span>cozy, <\/span>comfortable, <\/span>laid-back<\/span> atmosphere<\/span> for the presenters, audience, and judges<\/span> to interact<\/span> a<\/span>s s<\/span>even<\/span> projects were presented<\/span>. <\/span>The Changemaker program provides Carleton students an opportunity to explore, design and propose real world solutions to challenges through the lens of the United Nations\u2019s Sustainable Development Goals. Solutions can be applied on the global, national, or local level and may be presented in a variety of forms which include product ideas, social enterprise services, policy points or academic research.<\/span> Contestants pitched savvy solutions<\/span> that varied from goal-tracking apps, centralized student club platforms, <\/span>to<\/span> public transportation improvements.<\/span> Three judges, Amanda Goth,<\/span> University Secretary<\/span> at Carleton University<\/span>, <\/span>Cheralyn<\/span> Chok,<\/span> Executive Director of Propel Impact,<\/span> and Chris Lannon<\/span>, Director of Industry Partnership Services at Carleton University,<\/span> provided feedback to help student participants <\/span>evaluate the viability and potential impact of their <\/span>ideas <\/span>in a new way. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

1<\/span>st<\/span> Place Winter 2023, <\/span>Fortunat<\/span> Ouedraogo<\/span>, Bachelor of Commerce:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Throughout the Winter 2023 semester, <\/span>Fortunat<\/span> Ouedraogo<\/span>, a second-year Bachelor of Commerce student, <\/span>formulated a practical solution aimed at offering a more vibrant university experience for students. His innovation, Civitas, is a web-based platform designed to foster a more active, engaged, and interconnected Carleton community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Utilizing an interactive interface, Civitas is poised to highlight all university events while curating a perso<\/span>nalized user experience based on individual affi<\/span>liations. With integrated tools, the platform enables clubs and societies to effectively communicate and publicize their upcoming events. In turn, this draws prospective members and nurtures a more immersive and unique campus experience for students.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

2<\/span>nd<\/span> Place Winter 2023, <\/span>Satyan<\/span> Thayaparan<\/span>, Bachelor of Computer Science: <\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Addressing the <\/span>often-overlooked<\/span> issue of mental health stigma, <\/span>Stayan<\/span> Thayaparan<\/span>, a third-year Bachelor of Computer Science student, conceptualized a solution offering an unpressured environment where individuals can freely discuss their mental health challenges. His solution, Open Space, fosters a comfortable, open-minded space where individuals share their experiences without fear of judgment or cultural stigmatization.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Open Space sessions serve as a platform for open discussion among young adult students facing mental health challenges. Recognizing that fear of judgement often hinders individuals from expressing their feelings, the sessions will be facilitated by individuals who share their experiences first, setting a precedent of trust and empathy. Sessions will be hosted 3-4 times per semester, strategically timed during stress-prone periods, ensuring the support is there when students are most likely to need it.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ha<\/span>tch: Pitch Night 2023<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u200bA<\/span> week later, on April 11th, the Hatch pitch night took place at<\/span> Oliver\u2019s Pub, on the ground floor of <\/span>Nideyin\u00e0n<\/span> (formerly <\/span>the University Centre)<\/span>. <\/span>Eleven<\/span> business<\/span>es<\/span> were presented<\/span>, many of which were just <\/span>ideas at the start of the te<\/span>rm. <\/span>Student founders<\/span> spent time connecting with <\/span>and supporting <\/span>the members of their cohort<\/span> while g<\/span>etting feedback <\/span>from a<\/span> new panel of judges that included<\/span> Justin Zhang<\/span>,<\/span> co-founder of <\/span>Heaples<\/span> and<\/span> an <\/span>alumni of the Hatch program<\/span>, <\/span>Hallie <\/span>Kejick<\/span>, <\/span>Vice<\/span>–<\/span>President of Community Engagement at CUSA<\/span>, and <\/span>Dennis <\/span>Sakalauskas<\/span>, an<\/span> instructor with the Sprott School of Business<\/span> and founder of <\/span>DPS Original. <\/span>Pitches included<\/span> a news outlets for <\/span>the <\/span>younger generation, <\/span>a <\/span>sustainable solution for the energy crisis, <\/span>a <\/span>seamless networking app, <\/span>a <\/span>food waste solution, a sexual assault and relationship awareness podcast for young women, and more. <\/span>The Innovation Hub is proud of all who presented at the 2023 Hatch Pitch Night and<\/span> cannot wait to see the bright futures of these young founders<\/span>!<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hatch <\/span>Audience Awa<\/span>rd Winner: Nexus<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u200bThe Hatch CUSA pitch night came to an exciting <\/span>close with an interactive audience award. All members of the audience were encouraged to cast their votes about whose pitch was their <\/span>favourite<\/span>, with the winner taking home the audience award<\/span>. Although it was extremely close, the award ended up going to Nexus. Nexus is a social media app that is meant to simplify networking by allowing users to make faster and more seamless connections.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The app <\/span>has many innovative aspects, but the key function that makes it different from other networking apps is that users will be able to make a connection by simp<\/span>ly tapping their phones <\/span>together. The <\/span>founders<\/span> (<\/span>Aryaman <\/span>Harlalka<\/span>, David <\/span>Perras<\/span>, and Zach Rodgers)<\/span> gave a captivating presentation that had the entire audience engaged and eager for more.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

With all three of the founders comin<\/span>g from an industrial design background, they have plenty of experience, knowledge, and potential to make their idea become a reality.<\/span> We look forward to seeing the future of Nexus and what it offers to those who use networking<\/span> applications.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Launch: Pitch Night 2023<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u200bThe final pitc<\/span>h night of the Winter term<\/span> was held <\/span>on April<\/span> 13th for the Launch program<\/span>, designed to help founders grow an existing business. Most of<\/span> the participants at this stage are already incorporated, <\/span>and are in the process of <\/span>growing their business<\/span>es<\/span>. <\/span>This is the n<\/span>ext <\/span>step <\/span>for many founders <\/span>after they complete<\/span> the<\/span> Hatch<\/span> program<\/span>.<\/span> P<\/span>articipants <\/span>took <\/span>to the <\/span>RBCx Stage <\/span>at <\/span>Hub350 <\/span>in Kanata<\/span> to present their ideas<\/span>. The Innovation H<\/span>ub works closely with the team at CU<\/span>@Kanata <\/span>to build brid<\/span>ges with investors and entrepreneurs in <\/span>Canada\u2019s largest te<\/span>chnology park<\/span>.<\/span> From bilingual marketing agencies, to pick-up sports coordination apps, to portable bidets<\/span>, there was no shortage of brilliant ideas from our Launch participants.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Top Prize <\/span>Winner<\/span>: <\/span>Nura<\/span> Hashi<\/span> \u2013 <\/span>Wayso<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u200bAfter many intriguing pitches, the judges tallied up their scorecards to see who <\/span>was to receive the top prize. <\/span>Nura<\/span> Hashi<\/span> and her idea, <\/span>Wayso<\/span>, rightfully won the award. <\/span>Nura<\/span> gave a phenomenal presentation <\/span>for her product, which is a portable bidet. She explained how bidet users typically feel <\/span>isolated when they step out of their home due to the lack of bidet-use in Western culture. Because of the lack of bidets, users often end up resorting to rudimentary methods. <\/span>Nura<\/span> offer<\/span>s a solution with <\/span>Wayso<\/span>, a portable bidet that is compact, discrete, simple, <\/span>and <\/span>fairly priced.<\/span> Along with her idea and presentation, <\/span>Hashi<\/span> showed us that she has put in the time and done the research to take <\/span>Wayso<\/span> to the next stage<\/span>. With a great delivery, useful product, realistic budget, and solid <\/span>plan \/ timeline<\/span>, <\/span>Wayso<\/span> is on a direct path to business success.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n
