On November 26, 2021 the Government of Canada introduced new measures to address the omicron variant, including enhanced border measures for all travellers who have been in the Southern Africa region (South Africa, Eswatini, Lesotho, Botswana, Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Namibia).

On November 30, 2021 the Government of Canada announced further measures to address the COVID-19 omicron variant of concern. These include additional travel restrictions and enhanced testing requirements. Effective December 1, 2021, Egypt, Malawi and Nigeria have been added to the expanding country list with entry prohibitions announced on November 26, 2021.

Enhanced arrival testing and quarantine requirements for all travellers arriving by air (except for the United States) regardless of vaccination status will be introduced in the coming days. The Government of Canada is continually assessing this evolving situation, and will announce further measures as required.

We anticipate more information and guidance from the government in the coming weeks. Accordingly, Carleton University will continue to monitor these events and assess how they may impact our international community.

Students with confirmed travel plans are reminded to complete our Pre-Arrival Form in order to receive updated guidance and support throughout this process from our team. We recommend that students consult with their airline in the event of any last-minute changes needed to their itinerary as a result of changing border restrictions around the world. It is the student’s responsibility to ensure that they meet the entry requirements to Canada (and any country of transit on the way to Canada) at the time of entry.
