International students studying in Canada must have health insurance. The University Health Insurance Plan (UHIP) is administered by the ISSO. Please review the details below for information specific to students studying outside of Canada, students completing their studies in Fall 2020, and new students for the Winter 2021 term.

Students Studying Outside Canada: Opting out of UHIP

If you are taking online classes from outside Canada for the Winter 2021 term or were outside of Canada for Fall 2020, you can opt-out of UHIP as it’s not required. Please complete the UHIP opt-out form found on the ISSO’s UHIP website. If you opted-out of the plan for the Fall 2020 term, but plan on coming to Carleton during the winter, please email isso@carleton.ca to request that you be reinstated in UHIP. The deadline to opt-out of UHIP coverage is February 19, 2021.

Students Who Graduated in Fall 2020

If Fall 2020 is your last term of study and you are graduating in November 2020 or February 2021, your UHIP coverage expired December 1. You can extend your UHIP to June 30, 2021 (6 months) at a premium of $360 (single coverage). Find more details on the ISSO’s previous newspost about extending coverage past graduation.

New Students for Winter 2021

Students coming to Canada for Winter 2021 term classes will have their UHIP health card sent to their Carleton email by mid-December. Be sure to print off and carry with you as you will likely have to show proof of health insurance. There is a supplemental drug/dental plan for Carleton students. The Carleton University Students’ Association (CUSA) administers the plan for undergraduate students and the Graduate Students’ Association (GSA) administers a plan for graduate students. If you are starting classes in Winter 2021, enrolment is not automatic and you will need to opt in once you arrive in January. Opt-in dates apply.

New students are encouraged to attend the Health Insurance Q&A Sessions offered on January 14 at 3 pm EST and January 26 at 10:30 am EST to speak directly with the health plan administrators. Students can register for these events on the ISSO Events webpage.
