Determine your eligibility

The following academic eligibility criteria must be met at the time of your application:

  • Undergraduate students must be registered full-time with minimum 2nd year standing.
  • Undergraduate students must have completed at least one full academic year at Carleton University (4.0 credits at Carleton).
  • All students must have enough credits remaining in their degree program to study full-time at the partner institution.
  • Graduate students must have departmental approval.
  • For the general exchange program, a minimum overall CGPA of 7.0 in current completed courses is required
    • If your Overall CGPA in completed courses drops below a 7.0 before departure, then you may be removed from the exchange program.
  • A CGPA of 10.0 is required for the Killam Fellowships Program
  • Architecture students are required to have an 8.0 CGPA and 10.0 Studio GPA
  • Engineering students must consult their academic advisor about eligibility

The following financial considerations should be taken into account at the time of your application:

  • Outgoing students pay tuition to Carleton University, not the Host Institution.
  • Outgoing exchange students are responsible for the cost of their own accommodation, travel, and living expenses.
  • Awards and bursaries may be available from some host institutions but are not guaranteed.
  • Carleton University students are eligible to apply for OSAP or home-province student loans for the semester/year they will be studying abroad.
  • Consult the Awards Office website for bursary opportunities

Research your choices

  1. Choose a country and language in which you would like to study- by consulting Carleton’s list of partner institutions.
  2. Rank your top 5 choices and ensure that your choices are available to students in your degree program. Remember, not every exchange partnership is open to students from every faculty/program at Carleton. These restrictions are noted on the partner institution list. You will list up to three (3) partner institutions on your final exchange application. The exchange program can be competitive so you may not get your first choice. Think about each of your choices carefully before applying.
  3. Visit the International Exchange – Course Equivalencies Database. This is a database maintained by the Registrar’s Office which includes all courses from our international exchange partners that have been assessed for Carleton credit in the last three years. Also visit the websites of the institutions you are interested in to determine if the courses you need to complete your degree at Carleton are available.
  4. Research the services, resources, and application procedure offered/required by the institutions you are interested in to make sure they are the right fit for you. If you are a PMC student, you should be sure to research the support services offered by the institutions you are interested in. Please note that not all host institutions will be able to provide accommodation in the same manner as Carleton. See the PMC FAQ page for more details.
  5. Consider registering for a Summer Language Program in addition to your exchange, to improve your written and spoken skills in another language.
