Orientation refers to a series of programs offered to help new students transition to life at Carleton. Orientation will provide you with resources that will contribute to your academic success at Carleton. Throughout the week, you will have the opportunity to explore different aspects of student life, you will meet other international and Canadian students and you will participate in social and networking activities. These initiatives will help you navigate and be better acquainted with the university in time for the start of classes!

Orientation Week Activities

The ISSO organizes orientation  activities to help you make connections, meet other students, and become better familiarized with the university and the greater Ottawa community. Activities typically include meet and greets, shopping trips, museum visits, sporting activities, neighborhood tours, a Canadian heritage day, and much more!

  • 1:00 pm- 3:00 pm: Student Meet & Greet: Stop by and come meet other new students and the awesome ISSO staff at this meet and greet event! We will have volunteers in the University Centre 128 (The International Student Services Office). Drop by and say hi! Find the Facebook event here.
  • 3:00 pm: Early Residence Move-in
  • 3:00 pm- 5:00 pm: South Keys Shopping Trip: Join us on this important trip out to South Keys Shopping Centre in order to pick up any essentials that will be needed while at Carleton. Meet some of your fellow students and get familiar with the Ottawa area! We will be meeting on the 1st floor of Residence Commons at 3:00 pm and then taking the O-Train south from there. Bring $3.40 for each way you will be taking the O-Train ($6.80 in total). This event is free, but bring money for any essentials. Find the Facebook event here.
  • 8:00 pm: Movie Night (Hidden Figures): Are you ready to kick back and enjoy a movie with your favourite ISSO staff and volunteers? Come by UC 180 at 8:00 pm to watch Hidden Figures, a 2016 film about three women who serve as the brains behind one of the greatest operations in history as they work for NASA.   • 8:30 am- 4:45 pm: International Undergraduate Student Orientation:  Come and join us at our mandatory student orientation on Friday, September 1st. This is a great opportunity to become acquainted with the Carleton community and all that our school has to offer! You will hear from some great presenters that will help ease the transition into University. This orientation day combines academic opportunities with social experiences. Meet in the entrance of Southam Hall at 8:30 am. We will also have our Undergraduate Student Services Fair taking place in the Tory Quad from 1:30 pm- 2:15 pm to showcase all of the excellent services available on campus!   • 1:15 pm- 5:45 pm: International Graduate Student Orientation: Attend our mandatory International Graduate Orientation on Friday, September 1! This orientation will help prepare you for your next steps at Carleton. It will also allow you to meet our awesome staff, volunteers and fellow students! You will hear from some excellent presenters in order to ease the transition into our Carleton community! If you are interested in attending our Graduate Student Services Fair that showcases all of the excellent services at Carleton visit the Tory Quad between 12:30 pm-1:10 pm.   • 7:15 pm- 10:00 pm: Northern Lights (Parliament Hill Light Show): Join us on this awesome trip into downtown Ottawa in order to try out our world famous Beaver Tails and have a chance to see the incredible Northern Lights Show at Parliament Hill! This is a great opportunity to be able to see the city and meet other students! We will meet in front of the Bookstore on the 1st floor of the University Centre at 7:15 pm.   • 2:00 pm- 5:30 pm: Picnic in the Park: Are you ready for a relaxing day after a busy move? Join your favourite ISSO volunteers for an afternoon of food, games and much more! This event is potluck style so bring anything you want to contribute to our picnic. We will meet a the 1st floor of Residence Commons at 2:00 pm.   • 7:15 pm- 9:30 pm: Kontinuum Show: Join us on this awesome trip to The Kontinuum Show in the heart of Ottawa. It is an ultimate underground experience with a futuristic multimedia production in one of Ottawa’s future Light Rail Transit stations. Join us on Sunday, September 3 to go down to beautiful Landsdowne and experience the Farmers Market in full affect. We will explore the market and then will head on a walking tour of the Glebe. During our walk tour we will visit some local shops! Meet in front of the Bookstore on the 1st floor of the University Centre at 10:15 am. Bring your U-Pass as we will be taking the bus there.   • 9:15 am- 3:00 pm: Mooney’s Bay Beach Day: Are you ready to enjoy a nice relaxing day at the beach? Join us on our Mooney’s Bay Beach Day for an awesome day of fun activities, socializing and much more! As we will be there all day, we recommend that you bring a lunch and feel free to bring any beach activities. We will be meeting on the 1st floor of Residence commons at 9:15 am and then walking over to Mooney’s Bay Beach!   • 5:15 pm- 9:30 pm: All Canadian Dinner & Kontinuum Show: After a long day of fun come out to Flapjack’s Canadian Diner for our group dinner! This restaurant is well known in the Ottawa area for their take on Canadian dining! We will be meeting at the International Student Services Office (UC 128) at 5:15 pm! Bring your U-Pass as we will be taking the O-Train. For more information on the restaurant and their menu, check out their website: http://www.flapjacks.ca. Stop by the ISSO to reserve your spot as spaces are limited! This is event is free to attend, but you should bring $15-$20 to cover the cost of your dinner. Also, we will be going directly from dinner to the Kontinuum show if you wish to attend you must sign up for this event separately.   • 12:00 pm- 12:50 pm: Expo Carleton: If you would like to attend Expo Carleton in the Fieldhouse meet in the Quad area between University Centre, Canal Building and the Architecture building at 12:00 pm. Here, Carleton welcomes all incoming students and showcases the diversity in the clubs, services and societies that our university has to offer. This is optional before Orientation.
  • 12:50 pm- 5:45 pm: Exchange and Study Abroad Orientation: Attend our mandatory Exchange and Study Abroad Orientation on Tuesday, September 5! This orientation will help prepare you for your next steps at Carleton. It will also allow you to meet our awesome staff at the ISSO, volunteers and your fellow students! Registration, our Service Fair and Lunch are provided for Exchange and Study Abroad Orientation from 12:50 pm- 1:50 pm in the grass area between the University Centre, Canal Building and Architecture Building. The Orientation officially begins at 1:50 pm in Porter Hall University Centre 231 (UC 231) and goes until 5:45 pm. Find the Facebook event here.

  • 12:45 pm- 3:00 pm: Pedal Boating: Are you ready to enjoy all that Ottawa has to offer by enjoying an afternoon of Pedal Boating at our beautiful Dows Lake? Join your favourite ISSO staff and volunteers for an awesome afternoon! Each group will have an hour to spend on the Rideau Canal doing water activities! This event will cost $10 each for an hour on the pedal boat. Meet at the ISSO at (128 UC) at 12:45 pm and we will head to Dows Lake. Bring your U-Pass and government issued ID.   • 8:00 pm: Fall Orientation Outdoor Movie: During this time Fall Orientation will be premiering an outdoor movie at Alumni Park.

  • 2:00 pm- 10:00 pm: Explore Ottawa Day: To end our amazing Orientation week off right we will be going downtown to the Byward Market for a day of fun and exploring! We will begin the day with a tour of Ottawa on a double decker bus that will pick us up right here at Carleton. Be at the University Centre parking lot number 2 at 2:00 pm!  We will then take a guided tour of our beautiful Parliament Buildings downtown at Parliament Hill at 4:00 pm. Following our tour, your favourite ISSO staff and volunteers have put together an incredible scavenger hunt across the city that will take place from 5:00 pm-7:00 pm! We will then go together as a group at 7:00 pm to get beaver tails and this will allow for some free time to explore the Byward Market before we head to watch the Northern Light Show on Parliament Hill at 9:00 pm! The cost of the trip is $15 for the double decker bus (register and pay in advance at the ISSO with exact cash only). The rest of the day is free, but bring $5-$8 for beaver tails and money for any other souvenirs. You must come to the ISSO (UC 128) to reserve your spot and to sign a waiver. Spaces are limited!
