Residence Network User Guidelines

Carleton University provides computer network connections to every student in the campus residences in support of the University’s academic mandate and to enhance students’ residence experience.

To ensure that the computer network operates effectively, the following regulations apply to its use:

  • A PC must not be used as a server or as a mirror site.
  • The residential network must not be used for commercial purposes.
  • Network hardware, wiring and jacks must not be modified or extended beyond the area designated for their use.
  • Students must not attempt to circumvent the restrictions associated with the Residence Network.
  • Forgery (or any misrepresentation of one’s identity) or changing a designated IP address is prohibited.The network must not be used for illegal purposes. The transmission of any material that is in violation of any canadian federal or provincial statute or court order is prohibited.
  • The network must not be used to attempt unauthorized access to systems, software or data, nor to interfere with or disrupt network users, services or equipment. Disruptions include, but are not limited to, propagation of computer worms and viruses, the broadcast of intrusive or unsolicited advertising, any behaviour that impacts negatively the work of users of the network or other connected networks.
  • The network must not be used to transmit any communication where the meaning of the message, or its transmission or distribution, is intended to be or is likely to be perceived as being abusive, offensive, or harassing to the recipient or recipients thereof.

It is the student’s responsibility to ensure that anyone using his/her network connection does so appropriately, in compliance with all relevant university rules and regulations. Failure to comply with these rules may result in termination of the student’s network connection without notice and without refund of fees.

Statement Of Liability

Carleton University will not be responsible for any damage resulting from the use or failure of hardware or software provided by the university. Carleton does not guarantee that a student’s computer or equipment can be used successfully with the network and will not be responsible for damage to any such equipment connected to the network.
