Depending on when you first subscribed to a particular listserv from Carleton, your from-address could have been any of:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>&#x6a;a&#x6e;&#101;&#x5f;&#100;o&#x65;&#64;&#x63;&#97;r&#x6c;&#101;&#x74;&#111;n&#x2e;c&#x61;<\/li>\n<li>&#106;&#x61;n&#x65;&#x2e;&#100;&#x6f;e&#x40;&#x63;&#97;&#x72;l&#x65;&#x74;&#111;&#x6e;&#46;&#x63;&#x61;<\/li>\n<li>jan&#101;&#100;&#111;&#x65;&#x40;&#x63;&#x75;&#x6e;&#x65;t&#46;c&#97;&#114;&#108;&#101;&#x74;&#x6f;&#x6e;&#x2e;&#x63;&#x61;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Whichever of those it was, email addressed to it will still arrive in your mailbox. So if all you wish to do is continue receiving emails you need do nothing.<\/p>\n<p>However if you wish to post (i.e. send an email to to your listserv), and you receive a message that you are no longer authorized, you will need to update your email address with the listserv to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>&#x6a;&#97;n&#x65;&#x64;&#111;e&#x40;&#x63;&#117;n&#x65;&#116;&#46;&#x63;&#x61;&#114;l&#x65;&#x74;&#111;n&#x2e;&#99;&#97;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Check the bottom of a recent listserv message. Many listservs append instructions or a link for updating your email\u00a0address. \u00a0Worst-case, you can unsubscribe and then re-subscribe to\u00a0allow you to once more post to your listserv.<\/p>\n\t\t<\/dd>\n\n\t<dl>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"slideme\">\n\t<dl class=\"slideme__list\">\n\n\t\t<dt class=\"slideme__term\"><a href=\"#slideme-if-my-alias-is-jane-doecarleton-ca-why-do-some-recipients-see-janedoecunet-carleton-ca\" aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-controls=\"slideme-if-my-alias-is-jane-doecarleton-ca-why-do-some-recipients-see-janedoecunet-carleton-ca\" class=\"slideme__heading slideme__trigger\">If my\u00a0alias &#x69;s\u00a0\u00a0j&#x61;&#110;&#x65;&#x2e;d&#x6f;&#101;&#x40;&#x63;a&#x72;&#108;&#x65;&#x74;o&#x6e;&#46;&#x63;&#x61;, why do some recipients &#115;e&#x65;\u00a0j&#x61;n&#x65;d&#x6f;e&#x40;&#99;&#x75;&#110;&#x65;&#116;&#x2e;&#99;&#x61;&#114;&#x6c;&#101;&#x74;&#111;n&#x2e;c&#x61;?<\/a><\/dt>\n\n\t\t<dd class=\"slideme__description\" id=\"slideme-if-my-alias-is-jane-doecarleton-ca-why-do-some-recipients-see-janedoecunet-carleton-ca\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n\t\t\t<p>Your actual Carleton Exchange email address is (and has\u00a0always been):\u00a0&#106;&#97;&#110;&#101;&#x64;&#x6f;&#x65;&#x40;&#x63;un&#101;&#116;&#46;&#99;&#x61;&#x72;&#x6c;&#x65;&#x74;on&#46;&#99;&#97;.<\/p>\n<p>However, Carleton<strong> had been<\/strong>\u00a0intercepting outbound messages from the on-premise Exchange 2007 mail server and altering each message&#8217;s\u00a0email header so that it appeared to be coming from the email alias: &#106;&#x61;&#110;&#x65;&#46;&#x64;&#111;&#x65;&#64;&#x63;&#97;&#x72;l&#x65;t&#x6f;n&#x2e;c&#x61;.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately this practice of\u00a0altering\u00a0outbound email messages had\u00a0drawbacks:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>it introduced another point of failure and delay, since it requires all outbound email messages pass through an additional process\u00a0at Carleton, where the alteration of the email <em>from-address<\/em> can take place;<\/li>\n<li>it prevented the use of per-message encryption, as any encrypted messages were flagged as having been &#8220;tampered with&#8221; when their <em>from-address<\/em> was altered.<\/li>\n<li>when the on-premise Exchange 2007 mail server was retired, it would have been\u00a0difficult to implement for Exchange O365, since it would haved required all outbound messages from this hosted service be first redirected back to Carleton for alteration of their <em>from-address<\/em>, before\u00a0then being sent onward to their destinations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Given these drawbacks and the fact that your email is still always delivered to you, regardless of whether it is addressed to your\u00a0actual Exchange address, or to your\u00a0email alias, continuing to intercept and alter the <em>from-address<\/em> of\u00a0all outbound email messages was\u00a0not desirable.<\/p>\n<p>While some of your\u00a0recipients may &#8220;see&#8221; your actual Exchange\u00a0<strong>email\u00a0address<\/strong>, you\u00a0can\u00a0continue to include your <strong>email alias<\/strong> in your message\u00a0signatures, on your business cards, and on your web sites. <strong><em>Regardless<\/em><\/strong> of which\u00a0address your recipients use, your messages will be delivered to you.<\/p>\n\t\t<\/dd>\n\n\t<dl>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class=\"slideme\">\n\t<dl class=\"slideme__list\">\n\n\t\t<dt class=\"slideme__term\"><a href=\"#slideme-are-jane_doecarleton-ca-and-jane-doecarleton-ca-both-email-aliases\" aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-controls=\"slideme-are-jane_doecarleton-ca-and-jane-doecarleton-ca-both-email-aliases\" class=\"slideme__heading slideme__trigger\">A&#114;&#101;\u00a0ja&#110;&#101;&#x5f;&#x64;oe&#64;&#99;&#x61;&#x72;le&#116;&#x6f;&#x6e;&#x2e;c&#97; and j&#97;&#x6e;&#x65;&#x2e;d&#111;&#101;&#x40;&#x63;a&#114;&#108;&#x65;&#x74;on&#46;&#x63;&#x61; both email aliases?<\/a><\/dt>\n\n\t\t<dd class=\"slideme__description\" id=\"slideme-are-jane_doecarleton-ca-and-jane-doecarleton-ca-both-email-aliases\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n\t\t\t<p>Prior to 2012, Carleton email aliases used an underscore separator:\u00a0j&#97;&#x6e;e&#95;&#x64;o&#101;&#x40;c&#97;&#x72;&#108;&#x65;&#x74;&#111;&#x6e;&#x2e;&#99;&#x61;.\u00a0In 2012, the separator\u00a0was changed to a\u00a0&#8220;.&#8221; Any who had an\u00a0alias with an underscore had that format grandfathered, so\u00a0that they have two aliases, one with an underscore and one with a period; both\u00a0forms of their email alias are\u00a0accepted interchangeably. Any\u00a0new\u00a0faculty or staff member will only have the &#110;&#x65;w&#x65;&#x72;\u00a0j&#97;&#x6e;&#101;&#x2e;d&#111;&#x65;&#64;&#x63;a&#114;&#x6c;e&#x74;&#x6f;&#110;&#x2e;c&#97;\u00a0format as their alias.<\/p>\n\t\t<\/dd>\n\n\t<dl>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Email Address An\u00a0email address\u00a0points to a mailbox residing on an email server, where\u00a0your received and sent messages\u00a0are stored.
