{"id":32,"date":"2009-10-14T09:54:17","date_gmt":"2009-10-14T13:54:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/carleton.ca\/its\/project-office\/?page_id=11"},"modified":"2026-02-03T11:53:45","modified_gmt":"2026-02-03T16:53:45","slug":"methodology","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/its\/project-office\/methodology\/","title":{"rendered":"Methodology"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Project Management Office (PMO) has developed a Project Management Methodology (PMM) based on generally recognized project management principles in order to improve how information systems projects are managed and delivered.\u00a0 The Project Management Institute (PMI) framework was used as the basis for this methodology.<\/p>\n<p>The Project Management Methodology (PMM) will be invoked when the initiative\u00a0involves one or more of the following criteria:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Fiscal or base funding is needed for the project<\/li>\n<li>Project resources will require greater than 30 person days of effort<\/li>\n<li>Project has an impact on another department (either from the deliverables of the project or for project resourcing)<\/li>\n<li>Sponsor determines that strategic visibility for the initiative is necessary<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Projects meeting these criteria must be approved by the Digital Steering Committee (DSC), and are thus generally referred to as DSC projects. Such projects are tracked in a project management system called Eclipse PPM.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/its\/project-office\/methodology\/project-lifecycle\/\">Project Life Cycle<\/a> defines the phases that connect the beginning of a project to its end.\u00a0 It describes a series of activities that will guide you through managing a project using the Project Management Methodology, and shows the tasks that must be completed in each phase of a project. The required deliverables are specified, and links to necessary tools and templates are provided.<\/p>\n<p>In some cases, at the discretion of the PMO\/CIO, a project may be managed using the <a title=\"Project Lite\" href=\"http:\/\/carleton.ca\/its\/project-office\/methodology\/project-lite\/\">Project Lite<\/a> methodology. \u00a0These information systems projects are not managed by the PMO but it requires\u00a0the tracking of project milestones, budget and monthly statuses. \u00a0To find out more, please contact the Project Management Office.<\/p>\n<p>Definitions of common project management terms are available in the <a href=\"http:\/\/carleton.ca\/its\/project-office\/glossary\/\">Glossary<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Project Management Office (PMO) has developed a Project Management Methodology (PMM) based on generally recognized project management principles in order to improve how information systems projects are managed and delivered.\u00a0 The Project Management Institute (PMI) framework was used as the basis for this methodology.
