The Zelikovitz Centre for Jewish Studies was pleased to welcome Professor Frances Malino, the Sophia Moses Robison Professor of Jewish Studies and History Emerita at Wellesley College to speak about her research into the lives of Jewish women teaching in a network of schools extending from Tetouan in Morocco to Teheran in Iran.
Citing fascinating anecdotes from letters found in the archives of the Alliance Israelite Universelle in Paris, she discussed the working lives of the young female teachers, and their advocacy on behalf of their students, despite the precariousness of Jewish life in Muslim lands.
