Association for Canadian Jewish Studies Speaker’s Series<\/h3>\n

The Association for Canadian Jewish Studies is pleased to announce plans for a series of online events exploring contemporary and past issues relevant to the Canadian Jewish experience.<\/p>\n

The first events will take place this July and August and will draw from papers that would have been presented at the postponed annual conference.<\/p>\n

\n

There will also be presentations and discussions relevant to the challenging moment of racial tensions and anxieties relating to the COVID pandemic.<\/p>\n

They are also calling for proposals for a second stage of presentations, beginning in the Fall of 2020.<\/p>\n

The Canadian Society for Jewish Studies (CSJS) will hold its 15th<\/sup>\u00a0annual meeting in Ottawa on May 26 and 27, 2020<\/strong> at Carleton University, hosted by the Max and Tessie Zelikovitz Centre for Jewish Studies.<\/p>\n

The Canadian Society for Jewish Studies\/Soci\u00e9t\u00e9 canadienne des etudes juives was founded in Winnipeg in 2004 with the goal of promoting and facilitating the development of Jewish Studies in Canada.\u00a0 CSJS provides a venue for the presentation of Jewish studies research for researchers in Jewish studies living in Canada\u00a0and elsewhere. Individuals who are interested in this field are encouraged to become more involved with the organization and participate in its growth.<\/p>\n

All sessions will be open to the public.<\/p>\n

Each year Limmud surprises with its broad range of ideas, presentations and the diversity of its participants<\/p>\n

\u201cThe most famous rabbi in America (according to the Washington Post and Newsweek) Rabbi Shmuley Boteach will be presenting; Dr Tanhum Yoreh queries the impact of religious values on environmental behaviors; Rabbi Mike Moskowitz, trained\u00a0 at the Mir Yeshiva, in Jerusalem, and Beth Medrash Govoha\u200b (BMG)\u200b in Lakewood, New Jersey and who is a staunch advocate for trans rights; Professor Dani Kantz director of Two Foxes Consulting and senior research fellow at Bergische University Wuppertal, Germany explores various intersecting issues ranging from interfamilies, and interchildren, to citizenship to intergenerational transmission in Israel and Germany, and Avi Benlolo, \u200bprominent human rights activist, president, and chief executive officer of Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center for Holocaust Studies (FSWC), the Canadian branch of the Simon Wiesenthal Center.<\/p>\n

Public Lecture – Jodi Magness<\/h3>\n

Jodi Magness holds a senior endowed chair in the Department of Religious Studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill: the Kenan Distinguished Professor for Teaching Excellence in Early Judaism (since 2002).<\/p>\n

Dr. Magness specializes in the archaeology of ancient Palestine (modern Israel, Jordan, and the Palestinian territories) in the Roman, Byzantine, and early Islamic periods. Her research interests include Jerusalem, Qumran and the Dead Sea Scrolls, ancient synagogues, Masada, the Roman army in the East, and ancient pottery.,<\/p>\n

She will be giving a public lecture at the SJCC Sunday Feb 23rd<\/sup>, 7 pm, on the excavations she has been directing, since 2011, in Huqoq in Israel\u2019s Galilee.<\/p>\n

These excavations have brought to light the remains of a monumental Late Roman (fifth century) synagogue building paved with stunning and unique mosaics, including\u00a0biblical scenes and the first non-biblical story ever discovered decorating an ancient synagogue.<\/p>\n

International Holocaust Remembrance Day<\/h3>\n

International Holocaust Remembrance Day (January 27th<\/sup>) commemorates the victims of the Holocaust. It was designated by the United Nations General Assembly on November 1, 2005 in a resolution that followed a special session held earlier that year during which the United Nations General Assembly marked the 60th anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi concentration camps and the end of the Holocaust.\u00a0<\/p>\n

On behalf of\u00a0Library Archives Canada\u00a0and our partners, we invite you to the Ottawa commemoration of this important day.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

With a\u00a0special address\u00a0from\u00a0Pinchas Gutter<\/b>, a Holocaust Survivor who has spent much of his life raising awareness about the importance of Holocaust education.\u00a0Pinchas is the first Holocaust Survivor to be immortalized in an interactive three-dimensional projection in the USC Shoah Foundation\u2019s\u00a0New Dimensions in Testimony.\u00a0<\/i>At the event, he will discuss his own experience as well as the future of Holocaust Survivor testimonies.<\/p>\n

This important commemoration is proudly hosted by\u00a0Library & Archives Canada in partnership with\u00a0CIJA, Jewish Federation of Ottawa, The Centre for Holocaust Education & Scholarship, and the Wallenberg Citation Initiative.<\/p>\n
