{"id":1071,"date":"2010-11-22T16:07:21","date_gmt":"2010-11-22T21:07:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/carleton.ca\/jewishstudies\/?p=1071"},"modified":"2011-09-01T16:08:16","modified_gmt":"2011-09-01T20:08:16","slug":"anti-semitism-and-the-hollywood-social-problem-film","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/jewishstudies\/2010\/anti-semitism-and-the-hollywood-social-problem-film\/","title":{"rendered":"Anti-Semitism and the Hollywood Social Problem Film"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Steven Alan Carr<\/strong>, Associate Professor of Communication at Indiana University &#8212; Purdue University Fort Wayne<\/p>\n<p>Public Lecture<\/p>\n<p><strong>Anti-Semitism and the Hollywood Social Problem Film<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In 1947, Hollywood released two \u00a0films addressing anti-Semitism as a social problem,\u00a0<em>Crossfire<\/em>\u00a0(RKO) and\u00a0<em>Gentleman&#8217;s Agreement\u00a0<\/em>(20th Century-Fox). \u00a0Professor Carr&#8217;s lecture will explore what allowed the Hollywood social problem genre to tackle the subject of anti-Semitism and then, just as quickly, drop the subject.<\/p>\n<p>Steven Alan Carr is Associate Professor of Communication at Indiana University &#8212; Purdue University Fort Wayne where he also serves as\u00a0Graduate Program Director \u00a0and \u00a0Co-Director of the recent established IPFW Institute for Holocaust and Genocide Studies. \u00a0Professor Carr was a Post-doctoral Fellow at the Centre for Advanced Holocaust Studies at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in 2002-2003 and\u00a0is the author of\u00a0<em>Ho<\/em><em>llywood and Anti-Semitism: A Cultural History to World War II<\/em>, New York: Cambridge UP, 2001.
