About the Position:

The Department of Law and Legal Studies invites applications from highly qualified candidates for a preliminary (tenure-track) appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor beginning July 1, 2021.

The Department invites applications from candidates with a demonstrated interest and interdisciplinary research agenda in the area of Regulation, Business, and Economic Power. The area may include the critical analysis of:

  1. relations of global capitalism (as they are experienced at the international, national and local levels) and their intersection with institutions and practices of law and governance;
  2. the role of Indigenous peoples in local, global, and Indigenous economies and economic governance including intellectual property and Indigenous knowledges, procurement, as well as the intersection between corporate activities and the rights of Indigenous peoples;
  3. the roles, structures and regulation of corporations, other private economic institutions and alternative forms of economic organization such as the social economy; and
  4. the formulation and operation of legal mechanisms regulating private economic power, including contracts, banking and investment, corporate governance, the digital economy, labour, logistics and supply chains, and intellectual property.

The Department encourages innovative, critical and interdisciplinary approaches to these issues, including approaches informed by Indigenous, race, class, gender, disability and/or other vectors of social location and also welcomes a wide range of methodological and community-based approaches. The successful candidate will teach core courses in our undergraduate Business Law concentration and contribute to the continued development of these areas at the undergraduate and graduate levels, including consideration of how to diversify the Department’s business law curriculum.

About the Academic Unit:

The Department of Law and Legal Studies ( is the home of the oldest and largest undergraduate and graduate programs in Legal Studies in Canada. The Department is committed to interdisciplinary legal inquiry and is composed of scholars engaged in interdisciplinary teaching and research from a range of disciplines including communications, criminology, cultural studies, history, law, legal anthropology, political economy, political theory, and sociology.

The Department offers a B.A. and B.A. (Honours) in Law as well as a specialization in the Bachelor of Global and International Studies to over 1,300 students within the Faculty of Public Affairs, and includes concentrations in Human Rights and Transnational Law, Business Law, and Law, Policy and Government among its undergraduate programs. The Department also offers an M.A. and a Ph.D. in Legal Studies.


Candidates should hold (or expect to hold by the time of appointment) a doctoral degree, or the equivalent, in legal studies, law or a related discipline and demonstrate a capacity for theoretically­ informed, interdisciplinary scholarship and teaching. The successful candidate will have the ability to develop an externally-funded, high quality research program; will be committed to effective teaching at the undergraduate and graduate level; and will contribute effectively to the academic life of the Department, the Faculty and the University. A demonstrated record of excellence in teaching is an asset.
