For the past two decades, the international Scholars at Risk (SAR) program has been uniting at-risk academics whose safety is threatened at home with temporary research and teaching positions for academics in new countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2014, Department of Law and Legal Studies Professor <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/law\/people\/melanie-adrian\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Melanie Adrian<\/a> spearheaded a local Scholars at Risk (SAR) network in collaboration with the University of Ottawa to give foreign academics a unique opportunity to teach and interact with colleagues and students in safe environments. In January 2021 Professor Adrian was appointed to the Order of Ontario, largely for her contributions to SAR.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Read more about <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/scholars-at-risk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Scholars at Risk program at Carleton University<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"inaugural-scholar-at-risk\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Inaugural Scholar at Risk<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignleft wp-image-16621 size-medium\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"240\" height=\"159\" src=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/law\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/110\/Hossein-240x159.jpg\" alt=\"Hossein Raeesi\" class=\"wp-image-16621\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Professor Hossein Raeesi<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2015 Hossein Raeesi became the first Scholar at Risk hosted by our Department, and the first scholar hosted by Carleton University (in collaboration with the University of Ottawa). Raeesi has practiced Criminal and Human Rights law in Shiraz, Iran for 20 years and served as a board member of the Fars Province Bar Association for two terms. Raeesi is currently appointed as a Adjunct Research Professor, Department of Law and Legal Studies, and is continuing to attract and fulfill external research grants and projects, through the department.
