Congratulations to Carleton M.A. Legal Studies student, Danielle McKenzie, for her paper “Feeling the Effects of Canada’s Child-care Policy” which was awarded the inaugural Graduate Student Essay Prize<\/a> at the CLSA’s 2013 Annual Meeting!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In early June 2013, the Canadian Law and Society Association (CLSA) accepted submissions from Graduate students at Canadian universities for the ACDS-CLSA Graduate Student Essay Prize. McKenzie’s winning essay, which discusses the notion of the ‘deserving poor’ through a historical analyses of child-care policy in Canada, argues that the concept of ‘deserving’ is fundamentally framed by the gendered devaluing of reproductive work within capitalism, specifically regarding the accessibility and affordability of child-care services. In recognition of the achievement, McKenzie’s essay will be published in the Canadian Journal of Law and Society\/Revue Canadienne Droit et Soci\u00e9t\u00e9<\/em>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
