The Department of Law and Legal Studies invites all our  students, staff and faculty to attend the Ottawa premiere of “Push”<\/a>,<\/strong> a documentary film that follows Leilani Farha<\/a>, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Right to Adequate Housing and Executive Director of Canada Without Poverty<\/a>. <\/strong>Following Leilani Farha’s highly successful Chet Mitchell Memorial Lecture<\/a> this past February, the Department is proud to extend the invitation to this very timely and important documentary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is PUSH<\/strong>?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

PUSH<\/strong> is a documentary exploring why it has become so expensive to live in our cities, from award-winning documentary filmmaker Fredrik Gertten<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Housing prices are skyrocketing in cities around the world. Incomes aren\u2019t keeping up. Families are pushed out of their homes and not even nurses, police officers or firefighters can afford to live in the cities they are supposed to protect. Meanwhile, new buildings are left vacant, used as a place to house money instead of people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Leilani Farha is the UN Special Rapporteur on Housing. It\u2019s her job to challenge governments to secure a fundamental human right – housing for all. She\u2019s travelling the globe, trying to understand who\u2019s being pushed out of the city and why. She meets politicians, experts and the people directly affected by the growing housing crisis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Join Leilani Farha, and Canada Without Poverty, at the first independent screening of PUSH in Canada. From Barcelona to Toronto, PUSH sheds light on our increasingly unlivable cities, a new kind of faceless landlord, and a crisis that\u2019s about to affect us all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
