Using a course template creates consistency in your data over multiple iterations of your course. This yield more robust analytics that you can use to refine your course. Using templates can also create consistency across multiple courses. <span class=\"TextRun SCXW151133270 BCX2\" lang=\"EN-CA\" xml:lang=\"EN-CA\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW151133270 BCX2\">Not only will students thank you for a predictable navigation throughout the course, <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun ContextualSpellingAndGrammarErrorV2Themed SCXW151133270 BCX2\">you\u2019ll be<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW151133270 BCX2\"> able to make direct comparisons and <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW151133270 BCX2\">leverage<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW151133270 BCX2\"> predictive analytics<\/span><\/span>.<\/p>\n<h3><a id=\"include\"><\/a>Include &#8220;Checkpoints&#8221;<\/h3>\n<p>Checkpoints are assignments, tasks and interactions that you can use to observe and understand student behavior. Creating these types of assignments\/tasks can give you robust data points at specific points in the term. <a href=\"#intelligentagents\">Intelligent Agents<\/a> can be very useful for creating these checkpoints. Make sure the data comes from throughout the term and is not front loaded. Having most of your data at one point of the term may skew\/bias your analytics.<\/p>\n<h2>Using Learning Analytic Tool data to inform course design<\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">You can leverage Learning Analytics by collecting data from\u202f<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/tls\/educational-technology\/supported-educational-technology\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Carleton\u2019s supported EdTech Tools<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202fto help design and redesign your courses to better suit your pedagogical needs. The <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/brightspace\/instructors\/class-progress\/\">Class Progress tool<\/a> allows instructors to review student performance using any 4 chosen performance indicators from a selection of 9. Effective uses of these analytics are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Add links to Assessments as Content items in Modules.<br \/>\n<\/strong><span class=\"TextRun SCXW215779019 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-CA\" xml:lang=\"EN-CA\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW215779019 BCX0\">To have the most accurate data on student performance, assessments must be created\/linked to specific content items in modules. If the assessments are located elsewhere within the course, the analytics tracking will not be as accurate.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong>Use Brightspace tools over other LTI&#8217;s.<br \/>\n<\/strong><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW263076107 BCX0\">Analytics in Bri<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW263076107 BCX0\">g<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW263076107 BCX0\">htspace are only tracked through Brightspace\u2019s tools and functions. Third party or external tools (LTI integrations) are not included in the metrics. To get the full benefit of <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/learninganalytics\/learning-analytics-in-brightspace\/\">Core Analytics<\/a>, use <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW263076107 BCX0\">Brightspace&#8217;s<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW263076107 BCX0\"> built in tools<\/span>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>When using Quicklinks, try to prefer &#8220;content&#8221;.<br \/>\n<\/strong><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW222449826 BCX0\">The quick<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW222449826 BCX0\">link functionality can provide a powerful tool to redirect student to items of interest or importance. When using quicklinks make sure to have them redirect to modules, assessments and other forms of content for the greatest possible accuracy on student access and performance.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><a id=\"quizstats\"><\/a>Quiz Statistics &amp; Reports<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/brightspace\/instructors\/viewing-quiz-statistics\/\">Quiz Statistics<\/a> provide information on how students performed on a D2L Brightspace quiz and a detailed analysis of each question. <span class=\"TextRun Highlight SCXW108813577 BCX9\" lang=\"EN-CA\" xml:lang=\"EN-CA\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun CommentStart SCXW108813577 BCX9\">By selecting different types of <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/brightspace\/instructors\/creating-and-viewing-quiz-reports\/\">Q<\/a><\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun Highlight SCXW108813577 BCX9\" lang=\"EN-CA\" xml:lang=\"EN-CA\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW108813577 BCX9\"><a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/brightspace\/instructors\/creating-and-viewing-quiz-reports\/\">uiz Reports<\/a>, instructors will be able to access class score distributions, quiz <\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun Highlight SCXW108813577 BCX9\" lang=\"EN-CA\" xml:lang=\"EN-CA\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SpellingErrorV2 SCXW108813577 BCX9\">attempts<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun Highlight SCXW108813577 BCX9\" lang=\"EN-CA\" xml:lang=\"EN-CA\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW108813577 BCX9\">\u00a0logs, individual students\u2019 activity in a quiz, and statistics of each quiz question.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW108813577 BCX9\" data-ccp-props=\"{}\">Effective ways to inform course design when using Quiz Statistics and Reports are:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Build reports into your course design.<br \/>\n<\/strong>If you know that you will be using Quiz Reports and Quiz Statistics in your course, then its a good practice to build these reports and the feedback process into your course design. Create opportunities to use the feedback from Quiz reports in your Quiz designs, and set aside time to review the reports and redesign upcoming assessments if needed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><a id=\"intelligentagents\"><\/a>Intelligent Agents Data Reports<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/brightspace\/instructors\/using-intelligent-agents-to-create-data-reports\/\">Intelligent Agents<\/a> (IA&#8217;s) are automated tools that can be used to query many aspects of Brightspace courses and build reports based on the queries. Any query that can be made using <a href=\"mailto:https:\/\/carleton.ca\/brightspace\/instructors\/creating-release-conditions\/#:~:text=Release%20Conditions%20allow%20content%20to,completion%20of%20other%20course%20components.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-safelink=\"true\" data-linkindex=\"1\">release conditions<\/a> can be also done using an IA. Here are some ways you can start using IA&#8217;s as part of your course design:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>New Student IA.<br \/>\n<\/strong>Having an Intelligent Agent email the instructor every time a new student joins the course can be helpful to provide context for changing student numbers, and in turn the analytics that are based on class counts.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Use IA&#8217;s to gauge student progress.<br \/>\n<\/strong>IA&#8217;s can be used to send emails when students have not completed specific course modules or benchmarks. For example, an Intro to the course quiz with questions about syllabus content can be used to gate the rest of the course content. Intelligent Agents can be set to flag students who do not complete this quiz\u00a0 and email the instructor. Since these students have not accessed the course content at all, they are possibly at risk of poor performance.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Learning Analytics and Pedagogy<\/h2>\n<p>Learning Data is the key, but only effective when pedagogy is considered.
