{"id":3490,"date":"2021-02-25T12:18:07","date_gmt":"2021-02-25T17:18:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/lerrn\/?p=3490"},"modified":"2026-04-07T14:07:18","modified_gmt":"2026-04-07T18:07:18","slug":"lerrn-partner-mustafa-alio-awarded-the-meritorious-service-medal-civil-division-by-the-governor-general-of-canada","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/lerrn\/2021\/lerrn-partner-mustafa-alio-awarded-the-meritorious-service-medal-civil-division-by-the-governor-general-of-canada\/","title":{"rendered":"LERRN Partner Mustafa Alio awarded the Meritorious Service Medal (Civil Division) by the Governor General of Canada"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On 25 February 2021, LERRN Partner Mustafa Alio was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal (Civil Division) by the Office of the Governor General of Canada.<\/p>\n<p>As detailed in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gg.ca\/en\/media\/news\/2021\/meritorious-service-decorations-civil-division\">release from Rideau Hall<\/a> announcing the award, the &#8220;Meritorious Service Decorations recognize individuals who have performed a deed or an activity in a highly professional manner, or at a very high standard that brings benefit or honour to Canada.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Meritorious Service Medal is one of Canada&#8217;s highest civilian honors.<\/p>\n<p>Along with Bassel Ramli (MSM) and Omar Salaymeh (MSM), Mustafa Alio (MSM) was recognized &#8220;for founding <a href=\"https:\/\/jumpstartrefugee.ca\/\">Jumpstart Refugee Talent<\/a> to help newcomers enter the job market, become contributing citizens and start to rebuild their lives.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>This award is further recognition of the vibrant leadership that Mustafa has demonstrated in promoting the importance and value of <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/lerrn\/2020\/lerrn-idrc-webinar-refugee-leadership\/\">meaningful refugee participation<\/a>. This includes his work as <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/lerrn\/2020\/lerrn-partner-mustafa-alio-featured-in-toronto-star\/\">Refugee Advisor to the Delegation of Canada<\/a> to the Global Refugee Forum in Geneva in December 2019 and has his global efforts to promote the value of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kaldorcentre.unsw.edu.au\/publication\/refugees-refugees-refugee-leadership-during-covid-19-and-beyond\">refugee leadership<\/a> in the making of policy and the delivery of services.<\/p>\n<p>When states affirmed the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unhcr.org\/gcr\/GCR_English.pdf\">Global Compact on Refugees<\/a> in 2018, they recognized that &#8220;responses are most effective when they actively and meaningfully engage those they are intended to protect and assist.&#8221;\u00a0Mustafa brings vision, clarity, conviction and determination to his tireless work to make this commitment a reality.<\/p>\n<p>LERRN is honored to work closely with Mustafa and other refugee leaders in the critical work of supporting and promoting the meaningful participation of refugees in research, policy and practice.<\/p>\n<p>Congratulations, Mustafa!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On 25 February 2021, LERRN Partner Mustafa Alio was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal (Civil Division) by the Office of the Governor General of Canada.
