Picture of LLeaP lecturer Kevin CheungDr. Kevin Cheung has been a faculty member of the School of Mathematics and Statistics at Carleton University since 2005. After completing his PhD at the University of Waterloo in 2003, he spent two years at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology as a Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) Postdoctoral Fellow. His current academic interests include discrete optimization, designing and developing teaching tools, and exploiting technology to help students attain mastery.

Read what participants have said they enjoyed most about Dr. Cheung’s “Six Mathematical Results with Profound Impact” lecture series:

  • The lecturer was able to captivate the full range of participants who had little to a lot of background in math. The lecture series has spurred my interest to pursue these topics further. The lecturer was passionate and interesting and fun!
  • An engrossing historical approach. Lent philosophical and psychological insight alongside similarly significant equations. This series has instilled in me a desire to learn more about mathematics, and hopefully from the same lecturer in the future given that this was further embellished by an outstanding talent for humour.
  • This lecture series has far exceeded my expectations and I would take another by this lecturer. I would rate it as excellent.
  • Dr. Cheung’s early Spring 2019 lecture series “Six Mathematical Results with Profound Impact” was fantastic. This had to be a tough lecture series to teach as there was a real cross section of people with different backgrounds and familiarity with math. But the lecture series had something for everybody. Dr. Cheung also brought a sense of humour to a subject that could have been very dry. He kept it light and moved things along. He is an excellent lecturer. I would take another lecture series by him in a minute.
  • Absolutely a topper of a lecturer, presentation, material….everything! I can’t give enough praise for the lecturer, Kevin, the slides, and his enthusiastic method of presenting. I think that a significant number of people would come again if this same series was presented in a couple of years’ time. Lots of recommendation from Kevin for follow-up reading and viewing of lectures on the web. A real interesting topic. Glad it was offered!
  • Lecturer was brilliant, funny, energetic, clear, organized, and passionate. Content was unique. In all my years of [LLeaP], this is the lecture series I found most satisfying in teaching me something brand new. I did not understand everything, but that is why I participate. I want to take more math series.
  • Dr. Cheung was able to explain some very complex material in ways that made it accessible. I appreciate his sense of humour, and look forward to more math seminars in the future!
  • Dr. Cheung prepared a well thought out lecture series, with lots of historical background, and recommendation for books and papers to supplement the material covered. He was a good speaker and his series was excellent.
  • Dr. Cheung lectured in a clear and engaging style with great visuals and just the right amount of humour. His preparation was excellent and he handled questions very well. I was really impressed with his mastery of technology and of presentation skills – good use/size of images, the right amount of text per slide, the ability to write on the slides, showing videos, etc.
