Message from Janet Mantler, director of the Centre for Initiatives in Education

Guest lecturer- Dr. Argel Aguilar-Valles: Beyond the Magic of Mushrooms: Using Psychedelic Derivatives to Treat Depression

About the lecturer

Dr. Argel Aguilar-Valles and his lab are interested in the molecular mechanisms that underlie psychiatric and neurodevelopmental disorders. They use a combination of biochemistry, molecular biology, neuronal culture, and animal models to understand how genetic risk factors contribute to mental illness. Here are some of the research questions they are investigating:

How genetic mutations affect brain development to generate neurodevelopmental disorders

The molecular and cellular mechanism of action of novel, rapidly-acting antidepressants (ketamine, serotonergic psychedelics, etc.)
