Quotes from Exchange Alumni:

We asked language minor alumni who graduated 5+ years ago about their exchange experiences. Here’s what they had to say:

Katie – BIB/2010 (Minor in Spanish)

If you have the opportunity to study abroad, take it. The experience is life-changing in ways that are difficult to put into words…While my minor in Spanish gave me a strong foundation, nothing compares to being fully immersed in the language… Studying abroad doesn’t just teach you a language, it transforms the way you see yourself and your place in the world.

Alec – BA (Anthropology)/2010 (Minor in Japanese)

…if you have the chance, go study abroad!  Immerse yourself in the culture and language…because that will completely change your ability to speak and your motivations for learning.  It really opens you up because there’s nothing like going to another country where they speak the language that you’ve been studying and being able to speak with people…

Adam – BIB/2008 (Minor in German)

Heading overseas towards a partner university for two semesters, I had no idea Germany would become the starting place for my career and my second home. Studying German at Carleton prepared me for the immersive experience; on exchange I was able to round off my “textbook” German with practical experience. After graduating I moved back to Europe, where I’ve lived for eight years in total, the last two and a half of which were in Berlin.

Dallas – BIB/2013 (Minor in Mandarin Chinese)

I went to Shanghai as part of my exchange. It was amazing. It’s the biggest city I’ve ever lived in, and it gave me the confidence to go anywhere after that. 10/10 recommend an exchange, no matter where you go…(After graduating) I opened an entertainment business in Taiwan, became somewhat of rapping/MC/host celebrity in Taiwan. I got to host a travel show in Mandarin in Thailand. I founded the world’s first Chinese a capella rap battle league which now has over 22 million views on YouTube.
