spotlightHi everyone, and welcome to 2025! I hope you’ve all had a good start to the winter term – best of luck in all your classes!

My name is Leilah and I’m a part of the Work-Study program at the LLRC. In case you haven’t heard of us, the LLRC is Carleton’s very own Language Learning Resource Centre! We’re located in St. Patrick’s Building 337, and host all kinds of fun events, conversation groups, language tables, and clubs, all centered around languages and language learning. We also have a library of books in more than a dozen languages, as well as textbooks and other language learning materials. Anyone is welcome to come here and study, do homework, and meet with other language learners. We even have a board game collection, so be sure to check us out!

I’m currently a third-year student in the B.A Linguistics program, which means I like languages… a lot. So, for the next few months I’m going to be blending the things I’ve learned in my program with my own experience as a language learner to write blog posts about some of the languages Carleton offers! Each post in this Language Spotlight series will be highlighting some interesting feature(s) of a different language, with fun linguistics facts that might just be helpful on your language learning journey.

Regardless of whether or not you’re thinking about learning a language, I hope these blogs will help spark some interest in the wonderful world of languages and linguistics, and deepen your appreciation of the language(s) you already know!

We’ll also be featuring interviews with language learners and language teachers about their experiences! If that sounds like something you’re interested in, feel free to send an email to Mike Barker, our awesome LLRC coordinator (mikebarker@cunet.carleton.ca).

If there’s a topic you want me to cover, or a burning question you’d like me to address, feel free to let us know!
