Hi My name is Hatem Moustafa, I’m a first-year commerce student. I’m enrolled in ESLA. I’ve been singing almost my whole life as well as playing guitar. I recently started making original music so I thought I’d try to perform one in front of an audience.
I will be preforming my original song called The Devil in Me, which I have been working on for a while now. I hope you all will enjoy it.
- Arnold

大家好! My name is Arnold and this will be my first ever performance. I’m a third year marketing student minoring in Chinese. I initially took this class as a spare elective because I was curious what the fuss was all about this language being so hard (and they definitely weren’t wrong), but I found myself falling in love with it and it quickly became my favourite class. This is sadly my last term studying Chinese here so I figured I may as well put on a little number as a thank you to my amazing prof who supported me these past 4 years. Thank you Laura!
The song is 上帝保佑 (God bless me) by 竇唯 (Dou Wei). I’m not exactly religious but I stumbled upon the song on Spotify and found the lyrics moving when he speaks about him dealing with long distance heartbreak. I mean, who can’t relate?!
Good luck to everyone, looking forward to seeing all the amazing performances!

Hi Everyone! We are Erica and Ellie, and we are all currently taking second-year intensive Chinese. As soon as the announcement for Linguavision was put out, we jumped at the opportunity to participate because we love music and wanted to try something out of our comfort zones. We will be performing a Mandarin Chinese song called 玛尼情歌 (Mani Love Song). The lyrics paint a picture of love, the beautiful Tibetan landscape, and references Buddhism. We can’t wait to see everyone!

I’m a PhD student in Computer Science with a deep passion for languages and learning.
Over the years, I’ve focused on mastering French, having taken two summer courses at Carleton. Alongside my academic pursuits, I’ve always had a love for singing and expressing myself through music. When I heard about Linguavision, I was excited by the opportunity to combine my passion for languages with my love for music. I’m thrilled to be part of this event and look forward to having fun performing!
- Komal

Hi my name is Komal Saxena. I’m a second year student in the French program. I am someone who enjoys singing.
The song I have picked is On Ira par Zaz. I like this song because I used to sing it in choir at school. I’m hoping to challenge myself by singing in front of a crowd.
- Ilona
-
Bonjour ! I’m Ilona, an Information Resource Management student with a minor in French and a deep passion for the arts. An amateur musician at heart, I’ve performed in musical theatre and choir in the past, but this marks my first solo performance. After seven years away from studying French, I rediscovered my love for the language at university and am thrilled to bring it to life through music. I will be performing Youkali by Kurt Weill, with lyrics later written by Roger Fernay. Originally an instrumental interlude for the 1934 French play Marie Galante, Youkali is a Euro-tango that speaks of a longing for an whimsical yet unattainable paradise. I hope this performance brings you as much joy as it has brought me in preparing it. “Merde” (break a leg) to all the performers—I can’t wait to share the stage with you!
- Alasdair

Hi, I’m Alasdair MacDonald-Brett, a first-year student studying Chemistry and Physics. I’m from New Brunswick, and have been looking for a way to perform music. I’ve played guitar and sung for the last five years, so Linguavision was the perfect opportunity for me to do it. I’m excited to sing in a language other than English for the first time, along with playing my guitar. I can’t wait for April, and can’t wait to perform for everyone!

Hello again everyone! I’m a fourth-year standing biology student, currently taking my second elective course in Japanese. I’ve been singing in the language since I was about fourteen, and I plan to visit Japan once the semester ends. I look forward to performing for you!
What does it mean to finally be reunited with the person you love most only once you’ve become their enemy? Can your wishes overwrite reality? And what will you sacrifice to keep them safe? Hiroyuki Sawano originally composed scaPEGoat for the anime Owari no Seraph, collaborating with lyricists Benjamin Anderson and Tatami Jun to convey the soul of its secondary protagonist in both Japanese and English. To step up my linguistic game from last year’s competition, I’ve taken the liberty of translating some of the English sections back into Japanese. I hope you all love this song as much as I do!
- Naomi

Hi! I’m Naomi, and I’m in first year cognitive science. This is my first semester in Japanese, but I’ve been learning it on and off for a few years now. I’m a big fan of Japanese indie music. Ichiko Aoba is one of my favourites, so I’ll be singing Seabed Eden for my performance :)
- Rosie
-
My name is Rosie. I am a fourth year Art History student and minoring in Japanese. I’m taking my last Japanese class at Carleton University this semester, so I want to take part in Linguavision to enrich my university experience. Also I enjoy listening to Japanese pop songs from the Shōwa era, so I want to sing on stage. Can’t wait! ; )
- Steffy Jamila
-
Hey there, I’m Steffy Jamila and I am a first year Economics student. I’ve always loved learning languages and taught myself Japanese on and off for a few years before registering in my first Japanese course here at Carleton. I hope you all enjoy my performance of The Apothecary Diaries’ first opening, Hana ni Natte (Be a Flower) by Ryokuoushoku Shakai! みんな、笑って!!
- Noela

Hey! I’m Noëla and I’m a 3rd year student. Ever since middle school I’ve had a passion for learning languages! Whether I’ve been hitting the language learning books, watching dramas, writing out song lyrics to learn new words, or putting on little song-and-dance performances with my friends, I’ve loved learning through it all! With the song I chose it’s no different! I’ve learnt a lot of Korean through this song. Also, it’s silly but to me it’s kind of like my own little rocky anthem! Even if the lyrics don’t quite have to do with what I’m doing this song has tended to give me a little boost of energy to accomplish things(like finishing my assignments!!) as I feel like it takes me on an epic adventure with a mission! The music, the delivery of the lyrics and the dance performed by Gfriend all give it that punch! It is in Korean with a hint of of Spanish the 3 words “me gustas tu” repeated in the chorus. Although it’s sung by a group I’ll try to give the same energetic fun feel solo! I hope despite the lack of group it gives you that boost of energy! :)

안영하세요!
We’re the Heysawon girls—a trio of friends who bonded over our love of Korean culture, food and music. Singing together is our thing, and we’re always finding new ways to have fun and make memories along the way!
A lil hint about our performance:
When the 9 to 5 feels like a life sentence…Stay Tuned and CU There!!

We are 3 united lifeguards who not only love life but save it. We wanted to sing about happiness (or Felicità as some would say) because we can all agree bringing people joy is the best part of our days. Chloe, Global International Studies, Colter, Computer Science and Esa, Public Affairs and Policy Management are 3 people from separate faculties, diverse provinces yet we are brought together by our collective workplace and … Italian. And for one night and one night only (unless you pay us for a private gig) are here to enthral and evoke an emotion you have never felt before. When we asked each other if we should do Lingavision the excitement in our eyes said yes before our mouths did. Please sing along, dance and make sure our boss thinks we are not a disappointment. We look forward to bringing you some happiness either through how incredible we performed or how hard we tried yet disastrously failed.
- Camryn

Hey, my name is Camryn! I’m in my first year at Carleton in the Global and International Studies program. I took my first ever Spanish class as an elective last semester and loved it so much I decided to do it again. I’m so incredibly excited for Linguavision in April, grateful for the opportunity to push myself out of my comfort zone and share a Spanish version of a fun Disney song! Can’t wait to see you all there.
- Heidi
-
¡Hola! My name is Heidi, and I am a third-year Health Psychology student. I decided to learn Spanish because I have always wanted to teach French or English abroad, especially in South America.
I am a very passionate individual who loves having fun, dancing, and singing. For as long as I can remember, music has always helped me express my emotions. That’s why I will be singing a song by the Queen of Salsa herself, hoping to spread some positive energy. ¡Prepárense para bailar!
- Julia
-
Heyy what’s up everyone! I’m Julia, and I’m pretty excited to experience linguavision with you all for the first time. I am a second-year social work student, and I have been enrolled in both French & Spanish. I’ve always wanted to become fluent in Spanish, so here’s an opportunity for that!
I’m into football, music, and learning funky words I’ve never heard before. I love the complexity of music, and my favorite genre would have to be gospel Afrobeats. The song I chose represents a bit more about me and my faith…
I’m looking forward to meeting you all!

Hola! My name is Mikaela and I am a first year Psychology student. I’m originally from Toronto and have always loved the performing arts. I’ve been learning Spanish on my own for about a year on Duolingo (which was certainly not as effective as the class). I’m hoping to continue my Spanish learning at Carleton next year, and I’m excited to put what I’ve learned into action and have fun on the stage.
