Linguavision is an annual singing competition for Carleton language learners. Contestants (individuals and groups) sing songs in the language they\u2019re learning in front of a live audience. A panel of judges (and the audience) scores performances on both language and performance criteria. Cash prizes and bragging rights to be had!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The song I have picked is Je Veux par Zaz. I like this song because it sounds nice. It’s also an easy song for me to sing. I also genuinely like the artist and her voice<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My name is Sophie, and I am a first-year business student specializing in marketing. I joined Linguavision to step outside my comfort zone and share something I have loved since I was little: singing. Music has always been part of my everyday life. I sing constantly \u2014 at home, while cooking, in the shower \u2014 and I often create melodies and songs in my mind, even if I have never formally written or recorded them. I have never taken vocal lessons; singing has simply always been a natural way for me to express myself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I am currently taking a Spanish course and chose to perform in Spanish to challenge myself both musically and linguistically. Spanish has always been part of my life. My parents are from Chile and lived in Spain for many years, so I grew up hearing the language at home. I was born in France and later moved to Canada, which shaped my experience with French, Spanish, and English.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For me, performing is a way to channel emotion and tell a story through art, while also showcasing creativity, expression, and artistry.<\/p>\n\n\n <\/div>\n\n

I’ve been into Japanese media, especially anime and games, for as long as I can remember, and have always wanted to learn the language. I finally got the chance to learn it formally after coming to Carleton, and wanted to give Linguavision a shot since I love to sing! Music has always been a haven for me, and I fell in love with J-pop after hearing it in different animes. I love how music has a special way of conveying emotions, and you don’t need to understand the lyrics to connect with a song. I began engaging with Japanese five years ago and Korean a year later, inspired by movies, TV shows, and music. Outside of my major\u2019s workload, these are my comfort hobbies, and they help me survive super long assignments. If you see me on campus with headphones on, I\u2019m probably silently vibing to J-rock or K-pop while studying. I love watching performances and doing karaoke, and after singing a bit in my Korean class, I decided to join Linguavision. I\u2019ll be taking a big leap out of my comfort zone to sing for you all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019ll be performing a J-pop ballad by Aimer, adding my own Korean touch. The song reflects memories and emotions, along the way to reaching acceptance after parting ways. I chose it for how much its perspective deeply resonated with me. I can\u2019t wait to share this performance and meet other language learners. And, truth be told, someday I hope to tell my kids: you\u2019d never guess what your mom did on a random Tuesday!<\/p>\n\n\n <\/div>\n\n

I\u2019m an exchange student (3rd year) from Ireland and I study music, I\u2019ve been studying at Carleton for the past year – which means I\u2019ve been thrown into to new accents, new systems, and new ways of pronouncing my name. So, singing in Spanish felt like the next logical step.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019ve been learning Spanish for five years\u2026 with a small two-year break where I like to think I was \u201cletting it marinate.\u201d This year, I decided to pick it back up because I missed it – and because five years is far too long to still be negotiating with irregular verbs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Music has been a much more consistent commitment in my life. I\u2019ve been playing and learning music since I was 10, and I play piano. Somewhere between scales and key changes, I realised language and music aren\u2019t that different. Both require rhythm, confidence, and the ability to recover smoothly when something goes slightly wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So entering this contest feels like combining two things that have shaped me – music and Spanish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If all else fails, at least the piano can\u2019t correct my pronunciation.<\/p>\n\n\n <\/div>\n\n

Hi I\u2019m Noela! From a young age I\u2019ve loved to learn languages, sing and watch shows. Chinese is one of the languages I took interest in learning from the time I was in middle school (along with Korean)! Whether through the shows, the music, the books or the classroom, learning the language has been one of the most exciting and rewarding processes ever! I\u2019m very excited to keep learning more and more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 I find the songs in Chinese dramas to be so beautiful, and they\u2019re always my favourite part. That is why the song I chose comes from one of my favourite Chinese dramas called A Love So Beautiful<\/em>\u2019s <\/em>OST. This show is one of the first Chinese dramas I ever watched in middle school. Ever since I watched the show, the Opening theme song was one I had on repeat on my mp3 player where I happened to learn my first few Chinese words that I’ll never forget:  \u201c\u6211\u559c\u6b22\u4f60\u201d and the reply \u201c\u6211\u4e0d\u559c\u6b22\u4f60\u201d (cut from the scene where the main characters as school students were sweeping outside and one told the other\u201d I like you\u201d and the other replied \u201cI don\u2019t like you\u201d) that would be heard before the song started playing. This was one of the many things that sparked my interest and curiosity in learning. I\u2019m so happy that after all these years, not only can I listen to this song, but I can also understand and read the words to it too! It is such a cute song and I hope you\u2019ll like it too! I hope to make my performance feel something like the show and the words of the song.<\/p>\n\n\n <\/div>\n\n

Hi everyone, I’m Niyana (My legal name is Waersi Nigere, but I go by Niyana). I’m a  first-year Cognitive Science student . I’m from China, I’ve been in Canada for three years. I like singing, dancing, playing piano, painting, and games. I chose Korean this semester becouse I love Kpop so bad and I feel like learning Korean would be much convinient for me to understand what they are saying and learning  their lyrics. I used to participate in stage performances like this back in high school, but most of them were just dancing. I’ve actually studied vocal for quite a while but didn’t have that much opportunity to show my talent, and that’s why I decided to join this contest. Ciao tutti! I will sing in Italian, also known as the musical language. Since I could remember I loved singing, in French then in English, and I really enjoyed my years taking Italian classes. So why not combine both? A little bit about the song: it is titled Maledetto ciao, sung by Gianna Nannini (who has a film on her singing career on Netflix!). The song is about suffering and fighting for life, a reminder that pain and joy can coexist.

Aiko is ecstatic to be making her Linguavision <\/em>debut! After discovering Linguavision<\/em> from a friend who competed last year, Aiko knew this competition was for her. Coming from a long background in theatre, dance, and music, the arts have always played an important role in her life. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In her final year, the stars aligned and Aiko was finally able to take her first Japanese Language course at Carleton. Though she is Japanese, the language was never something she had picked up on. Through the Japanese course at Carleton, Aiko has been fortunate enough to participate in Linguavision<\/em>, and gain the basic language skills needed for her first trip to Japan this summer!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bonjour tout le monde! Lol whatsup? My name is Julia Johnson, and I am in my 3rd year of the Social Work program. I was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, raised in Ottawa, and have a Jamaican background. With such a diverse upbringing, music has been constant in my life. If anyone knows Jamaican Pentecostals\u2026you know how we get DOWN. That being said, my favourite genres of music are definitely Jamaican melodies, gospel and Christian Afrobeat. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A bit about me: I am a Christian who sings on my church’s worship team and loves learning new piano songs. I am bilingual and have been studying Spanish for about a year now, so I’m hoping to add another language under my belt. I’m into sports, public speaking, and dominating my family at Scrabble \ud83d\ude09 (yk who u are).
