{"id":346,"date":"2019-06-26T09:28:35","date_gmt":"2019-06-26T13:28:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/mae\/?post_type=cu_people&#038;p=346"},"modified":"2025-07-23T12:05:32","modified_gmt":"2025-07-23T16:05:32","slug":"matthew-johnson","status":"publish","type":"cu_people","link":"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/mae\/people\/matthew-johnson\/","title":{"rendered":"Matthew Johnson"},"content":{"rendered":"<header class=\"mb-6 cu-pageheader cu-component-updated md:mb-12\">\n    <h1 class=\"cu-prose-first-last font-semibold !mt-2 mb-4 md:mb-6 text-3xl md:text-4xl lg:text-5xl lg:leading-[3.5rem] relative after:absolute after:h-px after:bottom-0 pb-5 after:w-10 after:bg-cu-red after:left-px\">\n                    \n             \n                \n            <\/h1>\n\n    \n    <\/header>\n\n\n\n<p>Matt heads the <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/eerl\/\">Energy &amp; Emissions Research Lab (EERL)<\/a>, who conduct internationally renowned research quantifying and mitigating methane and black carbon emissions in the upstream energy sector.&nbsp; Matt is also Scientific Director of the NSERC <a href=\"https:\/\/flarenet.ca\/\">FlareNet<\/a> Strategic Network, a collaboration of five Canadian Universities and several national and international partners to quantify and mitigate flaring in the oil and gas sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Matt\u2019s current research interests include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Aerial quantification of methane emissions and application to create measurement-based inventories<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Quantification and mitigation of emissions from gas flaring including large-scale windtunnel experiments and field work<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Optical diagnostics, including EERL\u2019s novel \u201cVentX\u201d technology for measuring methane flux from unsteady sources like storage tanks and \u201csky-LOSA\u201d technology for quantifying black carbon emissions in plumes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Technical analysis to support evidence-based methane regulations and standards<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Alternate approaches to methane detection including characterization of satellite systems and applications of UAV-based techniques<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Field measurement work to enable translation of lab-based research to practical outcomes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Techno-economic analysis of greenhouse gas mitigation potential in the upstream energy sector<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":3609,"template":"","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"cu_people_first_name":"Matthew","cu_people_last_name":"Johnson","cu_people_initials":"","footnotes":"","_links_to":"","_links_to_target":""},"cu_people_type":[76,86,13,105],"cu_people_expertise":[],"class_list":["post-346","cu_people","type-cu_people","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","cu_people_type-aerodynamics-and-fluid-mechanics","cu_people_type-combustion-and-heat-transfer","cu_people_type-faculty","cu_people_type-sustainable-energy-conversion-and-utilisation"],"acf":{"cu_people_job_title":"Professor","cu_people_degree":"B.Sc.(Eng.)
