\n GOOD NEWS: MAAE Welcomes Dr. Garces and Dr. Moo\n <\/h1>\n \n \n <\/header>\n\n <\/div>\n\n <\/div>\n\n <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n

The Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering welcomes two new faculty members this month.  Dr. Eng Kuan Moo<\/strong> and Dr. Irina T. Garces<\/strong> have joined Carleton University by way of Finland and Alberta, respectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Eng Kuan Moo has come to Ottawa from the University of Eastern Finland, after having completed his Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering at the University of Malaya, Malaysia.  His thesis was titled, In situ and in vitro chondrocyte biomechanics<\/em>, for which he received a Distinction Award.  Dr. Moo\u2019s supervisors were Drs. Belinda Murphy, and Noor Azuan Abu Osman.  During his Ph.D. studies, Dr. Moo travelled to the University of Calgary for research visits.  Dr. Moo was most recently a senior researcher and Marie-Sklodowska Postdoctoral Fellow<\/em> at the University of Eastern Finland, Kuopio, Finland, in the Faculty of Science and Forestry\u2019s Department of Applied Physics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Moo specializes in the biomechanics of soft tissues and cells, and tissue engineering.  As well as being an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Carleton University, Dr. Moo\u2019s research here will primarily investigate the mechanism of the development of tissue adhesion, particularly relevant to the integration of implanted engineered tissue to host biological tissue.  He also has plans on studying the mechanics of skeletal muscles through microscopic imaging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Besides hiking, mountain biking, and bouldering, Dr. Eng Kuan Moo is looking forward to connecting with the local community in Ottawa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Irina T. Garces obtained her Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Alberta, Edmonton. She was a MITACS Elevate Postdoctoral Fellow<\/em> at the University of Alberta and Innotech Alberta. She specialized in polymeric materials, including smart, composite, bio-based, and multifunctional nanomaterials. Her expertise includes studying and producing new techniques for additive manufacturing of polymeric-based materials. She has designed manufacturing methods, developed viscoelastic models to predict the behaviour of complex polymers, and developed the equipment and control to produce self-sensing actuators. Her most recent works include developing a new additive manufacturing system for processing regenerated cellulose to produce bio-based parts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She is now joining the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Carleton University as an Assistant Professor (Tenure-Track). She will be teaching solid mechanics, materials, design, and manufacturing courses. At Carleton, Dr. Garces will be conducting her research on “materials as machines” and how to use them in biomedical applications such as prosthetics\/orthotics and wearables.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Garces has been involved in developing new technologies for environmental monitoring. She is a passionate and active member of the start-up community. Originally from Ecuador, Irina recently moved from Edmonton, Alberta to Ottawa with her family. She is looking forward to exploring the city and running along the Rideau Canal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
