Mathematics (Applied Mathematics, Probability and Statistics, Pure Mathematics)<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Students pursuing studies in pure mathematics, applied mathematics, probability and statistics at the graduate level leading to a M.Sc. do so in a joint program offered by the School of Mathematics and Statistics at Carleton University and the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Ottawa under the auspices of the Ottawa-Carleton Institute of Mathematics and Statistics. The Institute is responsible for supervising the programs, regulations, and student admissions, and for providing a framework for interaction between the two departments at the research level.<\/p>\n<div class=\"slideme\"><dl class=\"slideme__list\"><dt class=\"slideme__term\"><a href=\"#slideme-admission-requirements\" aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-controls=\"slideme-admission-requirements\" class=\"slideme__heading slideme__trigger\">Admission Requirements<\/a><\/dt><dd class=\"slideme__description\" id=\"slideme-admission-requirements\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><p><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The normal requirement for admission to the master\u2019s program is an Honours Bachelor\u2019s degree in mathematics, or the equivalent, with at least high honours standing.<\/li>\n<li>Applicants holding a general (three-year) degree with at least high honours standing may be admitted to a qualifying-year program.<\/li>\n<li>Subsequent admission to the regular master\u2019s program depends upon performance during the qualifying-year program and will be decided no later than one year after admission to the qualifying-year program. Details are outlined in the <a href=\"http:\/\/calendar.carleton.ca\/grad\/gradregulations\/\">General Regulations<\/a> section of the Graduate Calendar.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><\/p><\/dd><dl><\/div>\n<div class=\"slideme\"><dl class=\"slideme__list\"><dt class=\"slideme__term\"><a href=\"#slideme-program-requirements\" aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-controls=\"slideme-program-requirements\" class=\"slideme__heading slideme__trigger\">Program Requirements<\/a><\/dt><dd class=\"slideme__description\" id=\"slideme-program-requirements\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><p><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span class=\"Apple-style-span\">2.0 credits and a thesis, or<\/span><\/li>\n<li>3.0 credits and a research project, or<\/li>\n<li>4.0 credits<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><\/p><\/dd><dl><\/div>\n<div class=\"slideme\"><dl class=\"slideme__list\"><dt class=\"slideme__term\"><a href=\"#slideme-course-selection\" aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-controls=\"slideme-course-selection\" class=\"slideme__heading slideme__trigger\">Course Selection<\/a><\/dt><dd class=\"slideme__description\" id=\"slideme-course-selection\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><p><\/p>\n<p>With the exception of students in the coursework option, all courses must be taken at the graduate level. See note on Comprehensive Examinations below.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><\/p><\/dd><dl><\/div>\n<div class=\"slideme\"><dl class=\"slideme__list\"><dt class=\"slideme__term\"><a href=\"#slideme-comprehensive-examinations\" aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-controls=\"slideme-comprehensive-examinations\" class=\"slideme__heading slideme__trigger\">Comprehensive Examinations<\/a><\/dt><dd class=\"slideme__description\" id=\"slideme-comprehensive-examinations\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><p>\n<p>Students specializing in mathematics or probability undertake a comprehensive examination in the following areas:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The candidate&#8217;s general area of specialization at the Ph.D. level<\/li>\n<li>Examinations on two topics chosen from applied analysis, discrete applied mathematics, algebra, analysis, probability, topology, and statistics.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Students specializing in statistics must write an examination in the following areas:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Mathematical statistics which includes multivariate analysis<\/li>\n<li>An examination in probability, and<\/li>\n<li>An examination in either (i) applied statistics or (ii) analysis.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In all cases, the examination must be completed successfully within twenty months of initial registration in the Ph.D. program in the case of full-time students, and within thirty-eight months of initial registration in the case of part-time students.<\/p>\n<p>All Ph.D. candidates are also required to undertake a final oral examination on the subject of their thesis.<\/p>\n<p><\/p><\/dd><dl><\/div><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Our Graduate Programs The School of Mathematics and Statistics offers many graduate programs.
