The ASN 2015 Convention invites proposals for individual papers or
\npanels. A panel includes a chair, three or four presentations based on
\nwritten papers, and a discussant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Convention is also welcoming offers to serve as discussant on a
\npanel to be created by the Program Committee from individual paper
\nproposals. The application to be considered as discussant can be
\nself-standing, or accompanied by an individual paper proposal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In order to send proposals to the Convention, the three mandatory items
\nindicated below (contact information, abstract, biographical statement)
\nmust be included in a single Word document (PDF documents will not be
\naccepted) attached to a single email message.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Each applicant \u2013 single or multiple authors in individual proposals,
\nevery member of a panel proposal \u2013 must also fill out a Fact Sheet
\nonline that can be accessed at https:\/\/www.surveymonkey.com\/s\/factsheet2015.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

IMPORTANT: Applicants can only send one paper proposal — whether as an
\nindividual proposal — or as a paper part of a panel proposal. The
\nProgram will not consider more than one paper proposal from the same
\napplicant. At the Convention, each panelist can only appear on a maximum
\nof TWO panels, only one of which can be in the capacity of a paper
\npresenter. For example, a panelist can chair a panel and present a paper
\non another, or chair a panel and be discussant or another, and so forth.
\nThis rule applies to co-authored papers, thus a co-authored paper
\npresentation counts as one appearance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Individual paper proposals must include four items:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

*Contact information: the name, email, postal address and academic
\naffiliation of the applicant.
\n*A 300- to 500-word abstract (shorter abstracts will not be considered)
\nthat includes the title of the paper.
\n*A 100-word biographical statement, in narrative form (a text with the
\nlength of one paragraph). Standard CVs will be rejected.
\nIndividual proposals featuring more than one author (joint proposal)
\nmust include the contact information and biographical statement of all
\nauthors and specify who among the co-authors intend to attend the
\nConvention. Only joint presenters attending the Convention will have
\ntheir names in the official program.
\n*A Fact Sheet, to be filled out online (see above). In the case of
\nco-authors, only those intending to attend the Convention must send a
\nFact Sheet. The Word document proposal must indicate that the Fact Sheet
\nhas been filled out online.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Panel proposals must include four items:
\n*Contact information (see above) of all proposed panelists.
\n*The title of the panel and a 200- to 300-word abstract of each paper.
\n*A 100-word biographical statement (see above) for each proposed
\npanelist. Statements in standard CV format will be rejected. The rules
\non joint proposals are the same as with individual proposals (see above).
\n*A Fact Sheet, to be filled out online (see above), for each panellist
\nattached to the proposal. The Word document proposal must indicate that
\nall panelists have filled out their Fact Sheet online.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Proposals can also be sent for roundtables and book panels. Roundtables
\ninclude a chair, four presenters, but no discussant, since the
\npresentations, unlike regular panels, are not based on written papers.
\nRoundtable proposals include the same four items as a panel proposal,
\nexcept that the 200- to 300-word abstracts are presentation abstracts,
\nrather than paper abstracts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Convention is also inviting proposals for Book Panels, based on
\nbooks published between January 2014 and February 2015. The proposal
\nmust include the Chair, three discussants, as well as the author. A Book
\nPanel proposal must include the same four items as a panel proposal,
\nexcept that the abstract is limited to a 200- to 300-word abstract of
\nthe book. The discussants need not submit an abstract.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Proposals for documentaries must include four items:
\n*Contact information (see above)
\n*A 300- to 500-word abstract of the documentary
\n*A 100-word biographical statement (see above). CVs will be rejected.
\n*A Fact Sheet filled out online (see above). Two copies of the
\ndocumentary on DVD (in NTSC or PAL format) will also need to be sent to
\nthe Convention, unless there is an agreement to provide a streaming
\nlink. These and other matters will be discussed upon receipt of the film
\nproposals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Proposals for a roundtable following the screening of a film are most
\nwelcome. In these cases, the requirements of a panel proposal apply, in
\naddition to the 300- to 500-word abstract of the film.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Proposals to serve as a discussant must include four items:
\n*Contact information (see above)
\n*A 100-word statement about your areas of expertise
\n*A 100-word biographical statement (see above). CVs will be rejected.
\n*A Fact Sheet filled out online (see above)
\nProposals for applicants already included in an individual paper or
\npanel proposal need only include the 100-word statement on areas of
\nexpertise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

IMPORTANT: All proposals must be sent in a single email message, with an
\nattached proposal in a Word document (PDFs will not be accepted)
\ncontaining contact information, an abstract, a biographical statement,
\nas well as a confirmation that the Fact Sheet has been filled out online
\n(or multiple Fact Sheets, in the case of co-authors and\/or panel
\nproposals). Proposals including contact information, the abstract and
\nthe bio statement in separate attachments, or over several email
\nmessages, will not be considered. The proposals must be sent to

The receipt of all proposals will be promptly acknowledged
\nelectronically, with some delay during deadline week, due to the high
\nvolume of proposals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

IMPORTANT: Participants are responsible for covering all travel and
\naccommodation costs. Unfortunately, ASN has no funding available for
\npanelists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An international Program Committee will be entrusted with the selection
\nof proposals. Applicants will be notified by January 2014 at the latest.
\nInformation regarding registration costs and other logistical questions
\nwill be communicated afterwards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\nadvertised in the Convention Program in past years. Due to
\nconsiderations of space, advertisers and exhibitors are encouraged to

The ASN Convention, the most attended international and
\ninter-disciplinary scholarly gathering of its kind, welcomes proposals
\non a wide range of topics related to nationalism, ethnicity, ethnic
\nconflict and national identity in several regional sections on Balkans,
\nCentral Europe, Russia, Ukraine, Eurasia, the Caucasus, and
\nTurkey\/Greece\/Cyprus, as well as thematic and cross-regional sections on
\nNationalism and Migration\/Diasporas. Disciplines represented include
\npolitical science, history, anthropology, sociology, international
\nstudies, security studies, geopolitics, area studies, economics,
\ngeography, sociolinguistics, literature, psychology, and related fields.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Convention is also inviting paper, panel, roundtable, or special
\npresentation proposals related to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022\u201cUkraine, Russia & the World,\u201d on the events\/international crisis
\nunleashed by \u201cMaidan,\u201d the fall of a regime, the war in Donbas, economic
\nsanctions, NATO etc.
\n\u2022\u201cSelf-Determination and the State,\u201d given new salience by the
\nreferendums in Scotland and Catalonia, the effects of Crimea\/Donbas, and
\nthe rise of ISIS;
\n\u2022\u201cHistory, Politics and Memory,\u201d on the construction and contestation of
\nthe memory of historical events in sites, symbols, discourse and research;
\n\u2022\u201cGender & Identity,\u201d on the salience of gender in discourse,
\nrepresentation, practices and mobilization;
\n\u2022\u201cTransitional Justice & Minority Rights,\u201d encompassing human rights,
\nminority rights, war crimes, genocide, international tribunals, and
\nrelated issues;<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Prospective applicants can get a sense of the large thematic scope of
\nASN Convention papers by looking at the 2014 Final Program, which can be
\naccessed at

Popular topics have also included ethnic violence, language politics,
\nreligion and politics, EU integration, nation-bulding, the politics of
\nenergy, and post-conflict reconstruction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Papers presented at the Convention will be made available for $10 on a
\nCD to Convention attendees, but will neither be posted on the ASN
\nwebsite, nor be sold to Convention non-attendees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nationalities Papers, the ASN flagship journal, will present the
\nconsistently popular roundtable \u201cHow To Get Your Article Published,\u201d
\nwhich features the editors of some of the leading journals in the field.
\nNationalities Papers will also sponsor the opening reception.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
