Using improvisation, spoken word, digital culture and dance, participants examined <\/span>nine&nbsp;characteristics of a &#8216;<span lang=\"EN-CA\">contemporary nomad&#8217;:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"240\" height=\"164\" src=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/mds\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/177\/thumbnail_listening-240x164.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2303\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/mds\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/177\/thumbnail_listening-240x164.jpg 240w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/mds\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/177\/thumbnail_listening-160x109.jpg 160w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/mds\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/177\/thumbnail_listening-768x525.jpg 768w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/mds\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/177\/thumbnail_listening-400x273.jpg 400w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/mds\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/177\/thumbnail_listening-360x246.jpg 360w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/mds\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/177\/thumbnail_listening.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 240px) 100vw, 240px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-CA\">&nbsp;1) An incessant curiosity that drives someone to keep searching for answers about their existence;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-CA\">2) A sense of belonging nowhere completely but at the same time having parts of one\u2019s identity that are at home in different places;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-CA\">3) An inability to immerse oneself completely in any one established community even though there is an almost romantic longing to do so;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-CA\">4) An ability to recognize others in the same predicament;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-CA\">5) A formal indoctrination in more than one language, cultural form, or institutional system;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-CA\">6) An attachment to these languages, cultural forms, or institutions and to the people who practice them;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-CA\">7) Transplantation by force or other means from one or another of these institutional frameworks and\/or systems;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-CA\">8) Someone who regularly and sometimes even fluidly moves between these systems and institutions;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-CA\">9) A desire not to be pinned down.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As part of the recent international, interdisciplinary and bilingual conference on Migration\/Representation\/Stereoptypes, Dr. Henry Daniel, Professor of Dance and Performance Studies in the School for the Contemporary Arts in the Faculty of Communication, Art and Technology, Simon Fraser University, facilitated a masterclass on movement, migration and belonging.
