{"id":46,"date":"2013-02-14T14:29:19","date_gmt":"2013-02-14T19:29:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/carleton.ca\/memory\/?page_id=46"},"modified":"2013-04-09T12:47:57","modified_gmt":"2013-04-09T16:47:57","slug":"about","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/memory\/about\/","title":{"rendered":"About"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>The Max and Tessie Zelikovitz Centre at Carleton University is Canada&#8217;s &#8220;capital&#8221; research institute for Jewish Studies.<\/h3>\n<p><strong>With access to Ottawa at our front step, the Centre connects with Parliamentarians, public servants, diplomats, NGO&#8217;s, international organizations and the national media, as well as other academics and the broader community, on the basis of the innovative and cutting-edge research conducted by more than two dozen Zelikovitz researchers.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>If Not Now, When?<\/h2>\n<p>Carleton University\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/carleton.ca\/jewishstudies\/\">Zelikovitz Centre for Jewish Studies<\/a> is hosting\u00a0&#8220;If Not Now When?\u00a0Responsibility and Memory After the Holocaust,&#8221;\u00a0a public conference in recognition of Canada&#8217;s assumption of the Chair of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (formerly the ITF)\u00a0 to be held April 24 and 25, 2013.<\/p>\n<p>The conference\u2019s opening title \u201cIf Not Now, When?\u201d references one of the most well known ethical aphorisms from the Jewish tradition. It signals the conference\u2019s focus on responsibility and memory after the Shoah as not only a question for the Jewish people, but for the whole world.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cIf I am not for myself, then who will be for me? And if I am only for myself, then what am I? And if not now, when?\u201d<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\u2013<em>Rabbi Hillel the Elder, Pirkei Avot \/ Ethics of the Fathers 2:4<\/em><\/p>\n<p>This urgent call to responsibility for self may not be delayed. Thus this key refrain will be heard throughout the conference as we bring together parliamentarians, survivors, scholars and community leaders to remember and reflect critically on the painful lessons of the Shoah.<\/p>\n<p>The purpose of this conference is to bring together Canadian parliamentarians, senior Holocaust studies scholars, survivors and other public figures around the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance&#8217;s (formerly ITF) mandate of remembrance, education and research. \u00a0It is our hope that this conference will generate further public\u00a0discourse\u00a0on the importance of Holocaust education and the preservation of Holocaust memory.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Max and Tessie Zelikovitz Centre at Carleton University is Canada&#8217;s &#8220;capital&#8221; research institute for Jewish Studies.
