Laquesha B
Peer Mentor
Program & Year:
Second year Bachelor of Global and International Studies with a specialization in Latin American and Caribbean Studies
Why I’m a mentor:
As an international student, the first couple of weeks at Carleton were rough. I missed home constantly and generally felt out of step and anxious. I had the privilege of having an amazing mentor who helped me a lot through this experience and I want to lend that same level of support to someone else who may need it.
Something I wished I knew in my first year…
Particularly in my first semester at Carleton, I wished I knew that I was not alone. Everyone is experiencing some form of culture shock whether it be adjusting to the new environment or the intense workload but there are innumerable resources on campus designed to assist you in the transition and people who are willing to talk to you and help in whatever way they can. I wish I had taken advantage of some of these resources.
