This month come learn how to access that W-Drive from your iPad, iPhone, or iPod Touch, as well!<\/p>\n<p>\u2022\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/itunes.apple.com\/us\/app\/filebrowser-access-files-on\/id364738545\">FileBrowser<\/a>\u00a0 \u00a0SMB (aka W-Drive) client for iPhone and iPad<br \/>\n\u2022 VPN setup for Carleton (required for off-campus access to W-drives)<br \/>\n\u2022 Q&amp;A<\/p>\n<p><strong>Note<\/strong>: If you&#8217;re new to the iPad, you may wish to also consider our rotating series of\u00a0<a href=\"\">iPad for Beginners<\/a>\u00a0sessions\u2014you&#8217;re welcome to attend either beginner or intermediate sessions. Or both!<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Minutes:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h3>re: <a href=\"https:\/\/itunes.apple.com\/us\/app\/filebrowser-access-files-on\/id364738545\">FileBrowser<\/a>\u00a0app, $5<\/h3>\n<p>\u2022 FileBrowser instructions for Carleton are available from CCS:\u00a0<a title=\"CCS\/FileBrowser-for-iPad.pdf\" href=\"http:\/\/carleton.ca\/ccs\/wp-content\/uploads\/FileBrowser-for-iPad.pdf\">FileBrowser-for-iPad.pdf<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2022 These instructions assume you are using the CCS-provided W-drive.<br \/>\n<span style=\"padding-left: 20px;\">&#8211; Server name: <strong>ccsnas01.cunet.carleton.ca<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"padding-left: 20px;\">&#8211; Network share path to CCS-provided W-drive<strong>\\DeptFolders$<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u2022 One attendee had their files stored on a different server, so that the fully-qualifed name or IP address of their server had to be substituted in place of <strong>ccsnas01<\/strong>\u2026<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Several attendees were storing their files in differently-named network shares:<br \/>\n<span style=\"padding-left: 20px;\">\u2026we had them log into our PC as themselves, and we noted the path to their W-drive and then changed the path in <a href=\"https:\/\/itunes.apple.com\/us\/app\/filebrowser-access-files-on\/id364738545\">FileBrowser<\/a> from &#8220;DeptFolders$&#8221; to where their PC had indicated they were storing their files.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u2022 One attendee bought FileBrowser ($5) online and was concerned when she didn&#8217;t immediately receive her invoice from iTunes. This is normal\u2014iTunes invoices normally follow 1-3 days after purchase.<\/p>\n<h3>re: <strong>VPN<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>\u2022 <strong>Clarification<\/strong>: VPN is <strong>not<\/strong> necessary to use FileBrowser on-campus over the CU-Wireless WiFi network; only from <strong>off-campus<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Carleton VPN instructions are available from CCS:\u00a0<a title=\"CCS\/VPNConfiguration-for-iPad.pdf\" href=\"http:\/\/carleton.ca\/ccs\/wp-content\/uploads\/VPNConfiguration-for-iPad.pdf\">VPNConfiguration-for-iPad.pdf<br \/>\n<\/a><br \/>\n\u2022 A number of attendees received messages that the &#8220;shared secret&#8221; was incorrect. The actual problem was that they had entered the Group name inaccurately\u2014it&#8217;s &#8220;<strong>CarletonIntranetVPN<\/strong>&#8220;, case-sensitive, and note &#8220;<strong>Intranet<\/strong>&#8221; not &#8220;Internet&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 One attendee asked if <strong>Android<\/strong> comes with a built-in VPN client, as do all iPhones, iPod Touches, and iPads. The iTeam is focused on iOS, but we&#8217;re happy to help our\u00a0<strong>Android<\/strong>-using colleagues when we can. The answer is that the presence of a built-in VPN support varies by Android device and OS version. If you are looking for a 3rd-party VPN client for your Android be sure that it supports the &#8220;IPSec&#8221; aka &#8220;Cisco&#8221; flavour of VPN, which is what Carleton uses.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Thanks to all who attended\u2014your participation made our year-end session a great one!
