Event Description:

Food insecurity: Let’s move beyond charity!

Systemic issues require systemic solutions!

Come and hear from community groups and researchers who call for systemic social changes and a shift away from food charity approaches to address food insecurity.

This bilingual pan-Canadian event* will include a roundtable featuring four non-profit food groups, each of which combats food insecurity in Canada in its own way. What they share are actions and communication practices that seek to 1) raise awareness about the root causes of food insecurity and thereby reframe our approaches to the issue in Canada; 2) propose systemic and structural solutions that address food insecurity in a more sustainable way.

This roundtable will be followed by an interdisciplinary panel of researchers whose work dovetails with the food groups’ actions and propositions.

The roundtable will feature:

  • Community Food Centres Canada
  • Food First NL
  • Nanâtohk Mîciwin (Universal School Food Strategy) – Maskwacîs Education Schools Commission (MESC)
  • Regroupement des cuisines collectives du Québec

To learn more about the speakers and the groups they represent, see the Presenters’ bios and the Featured Food Groups sections.

How to get there:

The Concordia Directions webpage has detailed information to help you plan your trip to Montréal, whether you are arriving at Concordia’s downtown campus (Sir George Williams campus) by air, car or public transportation.

How to get to the building:

Public transit:
The closest metro station to the Hall Building is Guy-Concordia metro, about a 3-minute walk.

Biking:
Maisonneuve boulevard features a two-way bike path. Right across from the Hall building, on MacKay street, there is a public BIXI bike rental station. Note that you will need a credit card to use the system.

Parking at Concordia:
Paid street parking and private lot parking are available in the area at varying hourly rates.

There are two secure indoor parking garage options available at a maximum of $29.00 for 24-hour parking, both just a few hundred feet from the venue. Payment by credit card is completed onsite.

The LB Building lot is the closest to the event venue, but also fills up first. It has two 120-volt EV charging stations.

The Faubourg Building lot is another option. It has five 240-volt EV charging stations (at an additional cost).

If you go to the left once you have entered the building, you will find a hallway leading to the elevator. Take it up to the second floor:

You can also use the stairs or escalator facing the entrance of the building to reach the second floor:

On the second floor, on the opposite wall from the entrance to the building, you will see the Hive Café. Take the hallway that is at its left:

Follow that hallway, go through the glass doors, and you will have arrived at Reggie’s, on your right.

Accessibility:

Although the venue is located on the second floor of the Henry F. Hall building, it is accessible: there is an elevator on the ground floor near the main entrance (1455 boulevard de Maisonneuve West). There are gender-neutral washrooms in the Hall building, although, unfortunately, there are none on its second floor, where the event will be held. You can find a list of Concordia’s inclusive washrooms here.
