The internship gives students an opportunity for hands-on, supervised professional development experience, for seven to 10 hours a week, spanning over ten weeks (one semester) \u2014 work that helps to address partner organizations\u2019 needs and makes advances in the philanthropic and\/or nonprofit field. An internship culminates in a 20-30 page (or equivalent) analytical paper to be assessed by the academic supervisor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before the semester in which they wish to undertake an internship, students should contact the MPNL Graduate Administrator (<a href=\"mailto:mpnl@carleton.ca\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mpnl@carleton.ca<\/a>), who will help with placement possibilities using a <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/mpnl\/community-partners\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">list of our community partners<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"capstones\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Capstones<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Capstone Project is a mandatory course (PANL 5010) completed in the final term of the <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/mpnl\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MPNL program<\/a>. It provides valuable professional experience for students and contributions for nonprofit and philanthropic organizations. Students work in teams, under the guidance of a faculty supervisor, during the final fall term. Students work on projects nominated by <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/mpnl\/community-partners\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Community Partners<\/a>. The research looks at the challenges in accessing and interpreting philanthropic grantmaking data in Canada, and builds on some of the work that PFC did in the <a href=\"https:\/\/pfc.ca\/landscape-report-2024\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>2024<\/em> <em>Landscape Report<\/em><\/a>. The report found two main data challenges in the Canadian nonprofit sector: (1) poor data quality, including filing errors and inability to categorize funding destinations on T3010 tax forms; and (2) data gaps at Statistics Canada, partly because of its notable lack of focus on the charitable sector over the decades. The Capstone report received ANSER&#8217;s 2025 Master\u2019s Thesis\/Capstone Project Award.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignleft size-full is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/muttart.org\/resource\/how-to-start-a-nonprofit-in-canada-everything-you-need-to-know\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"648\" src=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/mpnl\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/90\/How-to-Start-Cover.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3129\" style=\"width:200px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/mpnl\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/90\/How-to-Start-Cover.png 500w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/mpnl\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/90\/How-to-Start-Cover-300x389.png 300w, https:\/\/carleton.ca\/mpnl\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/90\/How-to-Start-Cover-400x518.png 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/muttart.org\/resource\/how-to-start-a-nonprofit-in-canada-everything-you-need-to-know\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u201cHow to Start a Nonprofit in Canada: Everything You Need to Know\u201d<\/a> (2023) is a Capstone Project by MPNL students <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/mpnl\/2022\/kira-mcdermid\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kira McDermid<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/mpnl\/2022\/emma-wood\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Emma Wood<\/a> and was released by the <a href=\"https:\/\/muttart.org\/resource\/how-to-start-a-nonprofit-in-canada-everything-you-need-to-know\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Muttart Foundation<\/a>. The report outlines how to start a nonprofit organization in Canada, with specifics for each province and territory and at the federal level. Additionally, the authors explain the steps required during the first year of an organization\u2019s existence. Their sources include government and academic research, as well as interviews with four recent founders of organizations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignleft is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tanyarumble.com\/gift-acceptance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"287\" src=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/mpnl\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/90\/FollowTheMoneyReportCover300.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2789\" style=\"width:200px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tanyarumble.com\/gift-acceptance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cFollow the Money: A Study of Gift Acceptance Policies and Practices at Canadian Universities\u201d<\/a> (2023) is a Capstone project by Tanya Rumble, Bill Mintram and Ellen Doty, graduate students of the MPNL program. It provides key findings about if and how gift acceptance policies and practices account for: ethics; Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI); and reconciliation, decolonization and Indigenization. It also provides practical considerations for advancement professionals to consider when creating or revising gift acceptance policies in the short-, medium- and long-term. A <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/zPfHZ8HLQFs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">free, one-hour video webinar<\/a> also summarizes some of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tanyarumble.com\/gift-acceptance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cFollow the Money.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignleft is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/panl\/2023\/courtney-feldman-on-community-foundations-in-manitoba\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"250\" height=\"313\" src=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/mpnl\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/90\/Killarney-board-workshop250.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3391\" style=\"width:200px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/mpnl\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/90\/Leadership-Practices-of-Emerging-Community-Foundations-in-Manitoba.pdf\">Leadership Practices of Emerging Community Foundations in Manitoba<\/a>\u201d (2022) is by Courtney Feldman, a Capacity Building Consultant with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wpgfdn.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Winnipeg Foundation<\/a>. A key initiative in her portfolio is the Endow Manitoba program, which works to advance the sustainability, growth and impact of the province\u2019s 57 community foundations. Her Capstone highlights a shift in how community foundations are creating community impact, a shift from what was historically a financial institution for the community to, now, a vehicle for change and impact through coordinated efforts, long-term relationships and a holistic look at community wellbeing. Using findings and lessons from Canadian nonprofit leaders who faced difficult decisions, this workbook provides information to help groups to end a program or to close down an entire organization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignleft is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/muttart.org\/resource\/its-time-to-go-a-self-guided-workbook-to-assist-with-nonprofit-organizational-closure\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"244\" src=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/mpnl\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/90\/TimeToLeadCover.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-896\" style=\"width:200px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p> <a href=\"https:\/\/theonn.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/TimetoLead-ONNPublicationCopy.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cTime to lead: Empowering women in nonprofit leadership\u201d<\/a> (2019), by Christina Labarca, Lauren Phillips and Ray Eskritt, is a Capstone with the <a href=\"https:\/\/theonn.ca\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ontario Nonprofit Network<\/a>.
