{"id":92,"date":"2020-01-07T18:00:27","date_gmt":"2020-01-07T23:00:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/mprg\/?post_type=cu-people&#038;p=92"},"modified":"2020-01-07T18:04:21","modified_gmt":"2020-01-07T23:04:21","slug":"robert-barsky","status":"publish","type":"cu-people","link":"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/mprg\/people\/robert-barsky\/","title":{"rendered":"Robert Barsky"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Robert Barsky is a Tier I Canada Research Chair in Law, Narrative and Border Crossing at Carleton University. He has been a Visiting Professor at a number of institutions worldwide, including Yale University, the Free University of Amsterdam Law School and the University of Memphis Law School.<\/p>\n<p>Barsky\u2019s multidisciplinary research combines social justice, human rights, border and refugee studies with literary and artistic insights into the plight of vulnerable migrants. He has published widely, and his books on undocumented migrants, refugees and the milieus of Noam Chomsky and Zellig Harris have been translated into 14 languages. He has also been actively involved in several national and international research projects, supported by the Rockefeller Foundation, the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council, and the Dutch Royal Academy.<\/p>\n<p>With support from his Canada Research Chair on Law, Narrative and Border Crossing, Barsky is building on the work has done for the past 15 years on a border-crossing journal called\u00a0<em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ameriquests.org\/\">AmeriQuests: Narrative, Law and Society<\/a>,<\/em>\u00a0which he started as the Canadian Bicentennial Visiting Professor at Yale. The new an open-access e-journal called\u00a0<em>Contours<\/em>\u00a0will be\u00a0hosted on\u00a0MIT\u2019s Media Lab platform, and will focus on artistic representations of border-crossing through a combined exhibition space and academic journal.<\/p>\n<p>His work contributes to efforts to dispel false concordances that link terrorism, \u201canti-American\u201d behavior and economic hardship with persons deemed \u201cforeign\u201d. Says Barsky: \u201cHardening rhetoric, militarizing borders and building walls is counter-productive to every sane domestic and international policy,\u201d he says. \u201cWe need to combine judicial and policy work with cultural and humanistic efforts, so we can foster a deeper understanding of how central human movement is to a safe and peaceful world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Barsky is also committed to international education. For the past 15 years, he and his wife Marsha have combined their respective areas of research to create month-long \u201cMaymester\u201d courses in Switzerland, France and Italy.
