When the Musical Theatre Ensemble was cancelled last March due to the COVID – 19 Pandemic, we were just weeks away from presenting our revue in honour of Stephen Sondheim’s 90th birthday. Although we won’t quite be picking up where we left off, Sondheim is still 90, and David, Larry, and I are excited to be putting together another Sondheim revue for the term.
Classes will be held online this term using a selection of Carleton-approved platforms including Bandlab for Education, Zoom, and CULearn. Class will be on Tuesday nights from 6 pm starting on September 15thth. Each week will start with an interactive Information Sharing Session presented by David, Larry or me, on a different Musical Theatre topic including how to make a killer video, how to write a professional CV, stagecraft, acting 101 for musical theatre, and an introduction to dance for musical theatre. We will also be talking about technology and there will be sessions on how to use the platforms mentioned above, and on how to use audio and video technology to your advantage. There will also be individual break-out sessions with one of the instructors throughout the week. Instead of a live show, we are planning for an End-of-Term Video Collage to showcase your talents.
To take part, you will need to submit an audition video by midnight on Friday September 18th. For the video we would like you to perform a musical theatre song that shows you well. Feel free to move a bit but a full blocking is not required. If you have trouble finding a backing track, please be in touch with either David or me (emails at the top of this document). We would also like you to send us a copy of your CV by the same deadline. We will talk more about this in the first online class on Tuesday September 15th at 6 pm. In fact, most of the time in the first class will be about helping you with both the video and the CV.
This year the course is only open to Bachelor of Music students. Please register in section “J” of MUSI X915J – FALL 2020. The satisfactory/unsatisfactory assessment for the course will be based on attendance at the Information Sharing Sessions, class work, and preparation for and participation in the End-of-Term Video Collage.
Have a great rest of your summer and we’ll see you in September for a term like no other.
