Carleton Conspiracy band director Nicholas Dyson attended Boise State University in Boise, Idaho, studying trumpet with Marcellus Brown, Brad Peters and Lyle Manwaring, with additional studies with masters Bobby Shew and Jon Faddis. While at Boise State, Nicholas was a featured soloist and first trumpet with the BSU Symphonic Winds, BSU Orchestra, BSU Jazz Ensemble I, and BSU Blue Thunder Marching and Pep Band, traveling to Las Vegas, Los Angeles and Hawaii to support BSU sports teams. He is a recipient of BSU’s prestigious Gene Harris Jazz Scholarship.
Nicholas is the director of Capital Youth Jazz Orchestra (CYJO), an educationally driven jazz big band comprised primarily of students from Carleton University and the University of Ottawa. He teaches trumpet at Carleton University, is a Carleton University Jazz Camp faculty member, hosts the annual Trumpet Bootcamp at Alcorn Music Studios, and is in demand as a guest soloist and clinician, having served in that capacity at Crane School of Music – SUNY Potsdam, Boise State University, Ottawa Junior Jazz Band and many high schools throughout Canada and the US.
