{"id":1757,"date":"2010-06-21T15:12:42","date_gmt":"2010-06-21T19:12:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/carleton.ca\/music\/?page_id=1757"},"modified":"2026-03-02T12:51:30","modified_gmt":"2026-03-02T17:51:30","slug":"james-mcgowan","status":"publish","type":"cu_people","link":"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/music\/people\/james-mcgowan\/","title":{"rendered":"James McGowan"},"content":{"rendered":"<header class=\"mb-6 cu-pageheader cu-component-updated md:mb-12\">\n    <h1 class=\"cu-prose-first-last font-semibold !mt-2 mb-4 md:mb-6 text-3xl md:text-4xl lg:text-5xl lg:leading-[3.5rem] relative after:absolute after:h-px after:bottom-0 pb-5 after:w-10 after:bg-cu-red after:left-px\">\n                    \n             \n                \n            <\/h1>\n\n    \n    <\/header>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"Default\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">James McGowan is an <\/span><span lang=\"IT\">educator<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">, music theorist, pianist, and <\/span><span lang=\"IT\">composer. <\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">In addition to teaching music theory, musicianship, composition, Dr. McGowan serves as Carleton University Chair in Teaching Innovation (2020<\/span>\u2013)<span lang=\"EN-US\">, in which he administers the <\/span><span class=\"Hyperlink1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/hubforgood.carleton.ca\/project\/performative-learning-and-artistic-communities-of-engagement-place\/\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">PLACE<\/span><\/a><\/span> <span lang=\"EN-US\">project supporting pedagogical connections between Music and the Sprott School of Business, research in <\/span><span class=\"Hyperlink1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/mssc\/research\/reimagining-the-global-music-ensemble\/\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Global Music Ensembles<\/span><\/a><\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">, and arts on campus by administering a<\/span> <span class=\"Hyperlink1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/carleton.ca\/fass\/2021\/10\/songwriting-and-poetry-competition\/\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Songwriting and Poetry Competition<\/span><\/a><\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">. He has also served as Assistant Director of the Carleton Jazz Camp (2011<\/span>\u2013)<span lang=\"EN-US\">, Supervisor of Performance Studies, Supervisor of Ensembles, Masterclasses and Practica, and Undergraduate Supervisor. He was the recipient of a Carleton Teaching Achievement Award (2013), as well as multiple \u201c<\/span><span lang=\"FR\">Favourite Faculty<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u201d<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">residence awards, Carleton New Faculty Excellence in University Teaching Award, \u201cRaving Raven Teaching Excellence\u201d award, a Carleton University Student Association Teaching Excellence Award, and MSU Teaching Award for Humanities (2007, McMaster University). He has been a clinician and adjudicator for different arts organizations (Junos, Kiwanis, Lions, Canadian Music Showcase, City of Ottawa Arts Grants, etc.), and given workshops on topics including introductory improvisation, choral singing, jazz piano approaches, jazz music theory, and managing performance anxiety.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"Default\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">His primary research involves the theory, analysis, and pedagogy of tonal music, especially tonal jazz. His work has been published in <i>Canadian Music Educator<\/i>, <\/span><i><span lang=\"FR\">Jazz Perspectives<\/span><\/i>, <i><span lang=\"EN-US\">Journal of Jazz Studies<\/span><\/i>, <i>Int<\/i><i><span lang=\"FR\">\u00e9<\/span><\/i><i>gral<\/i>, <i><span lang=\"EN-US\">Discourses in Music<\/span><\/i>, <i><span lang=\"EN-US\">Proceedings of The Phenomenon of Singing International Symposium V<\/span><\/i><span lang=\"EN-US\"> and <i>CAML Review<\/i>, with other research forthcoming. He was accepted as a Fellow of the prestigious Mannes Institute for the Advanced Study of Music Theory (2008). He is currently Editor of the Jazz Theory Bibliography, searchable online database, affiliated with the Society for Music Theory, Jazz-Interest Group.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"Default\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">As a pianist, he specializes in improvised musics, and has performed in Canada, the United States, and Europe. In recent years, he has released four albums as co-leader: <i>4K<\/i> (2020) and <i>Two Intents<\/i><\/span> <span lang=\"EN-US\">(2017) with Modasaurus (a jazz-fusion quartet that performs Dr. McGowan<\/span><span dir=\"RTL\" lang=\"AR-SA\">\u2019<\/span><span lang=\"FR\">s compositions),<\/span>&nbsp;<i><span lang=\"EN-US\">Songs from the Bridge<\/span><\/i> <span lang=\"EN-US\">(2018) with EvenSong (a jazz-gospel quintet, funded by a grant from the United Church of Canada), and <i>Over the Mountain<\/i><\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">(2017) with percussionist Dong-Won Kim, (who performs with Yo-yo Ma<\/span><span dir=\"RTL\" lang=\"AR-SA\">\u2019<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">s Silk Road Ensemble). He is an award-winning composer for voice, choir, chamber ensemble, electronic music, and jazz combos. His compositions and arrangements have been performed (or selected for performance) by the Rocky Mountain Symphony Orchestra, Ottawa Symphony Orchestra, Coro Vivo, Atlantic Voices of Ottawa, Carleton University Choir, Alexander Singers and Players (Toronto), and others.
