JUNO nominated Petr Cancura<\/strong>, saxophonist, mandolinist, composer, and producer. Born in Czech Republic, Petr has played with great Canadian jazz, folk and African artists before attending New England Conservatory in Boston, which led to a 10-year residency in Brooklyn, New York. Petr, now based in Ottawa, Canada was the 2015-16 and 2021 Artist-In-Residence at Carleton University, the current Program Director of the Ottawa Jazz Festival and the 2015-17 Musical Director of the National Arts Center\u2019s Crossroads Series, reimagining the songs of current Canadian Songwriters for an all-star jazz cast. Cancura is a passionate music educator through classes, lessons as well as leading The Roots Ensemble at Carleton University<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cancura\u2019s aesthetic blends roots music and jazz to create an authentic, fresh and raw sound. Petr\u2019s Down Home was nominated for the 2015 Best Instrumental Album JUNO, and awarded the Independent Music Award for Best Instrumental Album of the Year. Petr\u2019s most recent album releases include a roots-inspired quartet record on vinyl featuring Kenny Wollesen and Tony Scherr, a cinema\/avante-garde induced quartet record featuring Jesse Zubot, Gordon Grdina and Jean Martin and a trio recording featuring the great Charlie Hunter and Geoff Clapp recorded in North Carolina. All of these are available on Roots2Boot Recordings, an independent record label run by Cancura. Cancura teaches at Carleton University (students, Roots Ensemble, course), runs a private studio and has been an adjudicator for<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Regional Capital Music Fest. Cancura has performed and recorded with the Prime Rib Big Band, Charlie Hunter, Danilo Perez, Julian Lage, Bob Moses, Joe Morris, Richie Barshay, The Ghost Train Orchestra, Kathleen Edwards, The Mighty Popo, Matt Wilson, Tony Scherr, Kenny Wollesen. Other credits include performances with Aretha Franklin, Jamie Cullum, Bobby Previte and many more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
